Acura confirmed all-new MDX Type S model, and here is what you need to know!

Honda’s luxury car division, Acura has finally introduced an all-new crossover that will succeed the outgoing MDX model. We first got a glimpse of the new high-rider back in October, and Acura has now developed the prototype into its upcoming flagship model.

The new crossover gets an all-new interior with a wide range of standard features and continues to support the same design language that was first introduced in the 2019 RDX. The luxury car marque has confirmed that the next installment of the MDX nameplate will hit dealerships around the country on February 2, 2021.

This is the fourth-generation of the MDX crossover, and the new model is 2.8 inches longer and 1.8 inches wider than its predecessor. The cabin of the 2022 MDX has been redesigned and now sits further back to accentuate the crossover’s sporty proportions.

The Japanese luxury brand has also confirmed that the 2022 model range of the MDX nameplate will no longer feature a hybrid model. According to a report by Autoblog, the new Type S variant will replace the electrified offering as the Japanese brands’ new performance model.

Automakers around the world are working hard at updating their product portfolios to feature some level of electrification, and that is the very reason why Acura’s announcement comes as a surprise to the global automotive industry.

2022 Acura MDX Type S

The front-end of the all-new MDX Type S is dominated by Acura’s JewelEye headlights and diamond Pentagon grille. The upcoming luxury crossover will be powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 motor that will produce 355 HP of power and 354 lb-ft of peak torque.

The new turbocharged power train replaces the 3-liter drive train that is found in the outgoing MDX Sport Hybrid variant. The 2020 MDX Sport Hybrid is equipped with a tri-electric motor setup that was paired to a 3-liter V6 power plant and produced 321 HP of maximum power.

It is unlikely that the new MDX Type S will be able to match the 27 MPG (combined) fuel economy delivered by the outgoing sport hybrid, but Acura may add a hybrid model to the 2022 model range down the line.

Acura runs a Brembo brake set up on the front wheels of the new MDX Type S, and the cabin gets a 25 speaker 1000 watt sound system. The 2022 Acura MDX Types S has been slated for a late summer 2021 launch, and we expect the company to reveal more information about the upcoming performance crossover in months to come.
