Only $750 Can Get You a Honda Accord Type R(ust)

Honda Accord Type R

It may sound impossible but even $750 may have been too much to spend on this Honda Accord Type R rust bucket.

In the Honda world the Type R is royalty. These are the sportiest, most track-worthy variants. They are always popular and in high demand. The new Honda Civic Type R is being hit with 5-figure markups from most dealerships. And the Civic is not the only Honda car to ever get the Type R treatment. The NSX and the Integra both had hot Type R variants. And while it may be far less well known, there was even a Honda Accord Type R. These were based on the sixth generation CH1 Accord chassis. Less than 2,000 were ever made and they were only offered in European markets. Not even Japan got this model. Japan got the CL1 chassis called (rather confusingly) the Euro-R. The car we are looking at here is the CH1 model and it is a total basket case.

We don’t mean to slam the CH1 in its entirety. It is a legit Type R with some cool features such as a limited-slip differential. But the car we are looking at here is rusted so badly that one stiff breeze could scatter the car in the wind. The Accord Type R was recently featured in a video posted on the juiceboxforyou YouTube channel. The good news is that the folks shooting the video only paid $750 for the car. The bad news is that may have been $749 too much. Nevertheless, these Irish lads appear to be determined to save the car and use it as a track rat. We hope they have the famous luck of the Irish because they are going to need it.

Good Stuff

Accord Type R engine

At the start of the video things don’t look too bad for this Honda Accord Type R. The paint looks decent, the car looks straight. It starts and runs. It has the usual red badging, Type R logos, and large rear wing. The car also comes with a surprisingly comprehensive set of service records. In fact, the previous owner seemed to take better care of the records than the car itself. It was being used as a track car, so the interior was stripped out. No big deal because the new owners also plan to use it for track duty. And this car appears to be a great foundation to build an entertaining and reliable track car.

Bad Stuff

Rust

And then it goes up on the lift. This is where things begin to literally fall apart. The car is rusting from the bottom up. The floor plans are rusted, the frame rails are rusted. Nearly every metal surface on this car is rusting. And not simple surface rust. There are entire sections that are missing as rust has devoured them. If you took this car on a track, the first time you hit some curbing the car might disintegrate around you. Let this be a lesson to anyone reading this that may be looking at an older car. Particularly if that older car is from an area with a climate that has a lot of rain or snow. Make sure you look it over thoroughly. If you can’t get it on a lift, then crawl underneath it. It could save you a big headache later.

Fun Stuff

Interior

The financially smart thing to do would probably be part this thing out and try to recover as much of that $750 as possible. But that would be no fun. These guys are going to try to make this rusty Honda Accord Type R track worthy again. That would be a heck of a feat. We hope they can make it happen as we would love to see another Honda tearing up a road course.
