Man Pays $20K Over Sticker for 2023 Civic Type R, Tries to Flip It, and Fails Spectacularly

2023 Civic Type R Flip

Poor financial decisions were made when someone overpaid for this 2023 Civic Type R, but thankfully, no one took the bait.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve lived through some unprecedented times, as well as some truly strange ones. The automotive market, for example, has been on fire, with used vehicles selling for more than new ones in some cases, thanks to the old fashioned economic rule of supply and demand. As such, it’s not uncommon to see vehicles of all kinds selling for way over sticker price – even ones that aren’t special in any way, shape, or form – while hot new performance vehicles like the 2023 Honda Civic Type R are getting marked up even more, with flippers taking advantage of the secondary market to make big profits. For those of us that are getting a bit weary of this practice, however, it seems as if the tide is starting to turn.

One example comes to us from this particular 2023 Civic Type R recently listed for sale on Cars & Bids. It’s actually the very first example of the new model to be listed on that auction site, and as such, one might expect to see it sell for big bucks, given how desirable it is. Hilariously, however, the seller disclosed that the original sticker price of the car was $44,385, but they paid a ridiculous markup of $20k – plus more for some “dealer-added equipment and services” – bringing the final sales price to $67,678.95.

One could safely say that the buyer got hosed, but instead of simply eating what will likely be a massive loss in the near future, they clearly figured that someone out there was willing to pay even more for the privilege of owning the latest and greatest(?) Civic Type R. Thus, they listed it for sale – with a reserve price, at least – and the results, well, were pretty embarrassing for everyone involved.

By the time the virtual hammer fell on this auction, bidding only reached $49k – falling far short of breaking even, let alone turning a profit on the truly ridiculous sum of money that original owner shelled out to bring it home. And truthfully, that should make most of us happy (unless you’re a flipper as well) – after all, the sooner people quite paying insane prices for these cars, the quicker those same prices will fall back to reasonable levels.
