JDM EP3 Civic Type R Runs 270 All-Motor Horsepower!
All eyes might be on the new Civic Type R, but this EP3 Type R proves the past versions still hold a place among the true enthusiasts.
Innovation and a unique approach to speed are hallmarks of the Honda brand. So naturally it would make sense that turbocharging would eventually come to the performance side of the deal. But we simply can’t forget one of the characteristics that made Hondas of yore so terrifically entertaining: a red-line that made the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up.
Keeping in line with Honda’s more traditional design is this EP3 Civic Type R, which breathes the same air as you and I. Starting with a K20A block, this 2.1 liter motor has 270 bhp, and achieves that through custom pistons that raise the compression ratio of 12.5:1. I’d mentioned the redline before, and this one put’s a stop to the revolutions at 9,500 RPM, and consequently, vtec doesn’t kick in till 7,500. But the gearing allows you to keep it on boil. Between the Skunk2 intake and the Toda exhaust, You’ll almost begin to wonder why the new Type R is so “soft.”
Of course, supporting mods came along for the build and the car breaks from tradition by riding on Mugen suspension rather than coil-overs. Handling isn’t adversely affected though, as a 1.5 way LSD keeps the power in check, and 4 piston Spoon brakes complete the package.
Comparing Type R’s will always happen, and we can help but feel that this one looks tame, compared to the new one for sure. That won’t dissuade any potential new buyers, but we can’t help but glance in the rear view mirror every now and then.
