Though the new 1.5-liter turbo-four in the Civic comes with just 180 ponies out of the factory, Hondata’s ECU tune found 34 more in the corral.

With the new, 11th-gen Honda Civic turning up at showrooms now, there are tons of aftermarket vendors ready to help owners make the most of their new rides. Body kits, wheels, tires, and, of course, the engine, all prime for a change. And speaking of the engine, there are more than a few looking at how to add more power to the 1.5-liter turbo-four the new Civic possesses.

One of those companies is Honda ECU tuner Hondata. According to MotorTrend, the company recently dove into the new Civic’s ECU, only to discover a few more ponies and torque hiding in the corral.

At the front wheels, the 180 horses and 177 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel filter down to 162 ponies and 163 lb-ft of torque. Through Hondata’s exploratory tune, though, an extra 34 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque were pulled out. Thus, the total output thus far for the 1.5-liter turbo-four through the tune comes out to 196 horsepower and 213 lb-ft of torque, all of which goes through a CVT to the front.

As for what Hondata’s plans are for the tune, MotorTrend says the company is working on a new version of FlashPro for the 11th-gen Civic. The device connects a given Honda to Hondata’s own software to allow an owner or a professional tuner to crank up the power as seen fit.

It’s also user-friendly, which is very handy as far as owners in California are concerned. After all, when the state decides to factor tunes into the annual state inspection, it’s good to know that FlashPro will also reset the ECU back to its factory state.

It’s not the first time Hondata’s found some hidden power in a Civic, either. In 2017, MotorTrend reported the company tuned a 10th-gen hatch with a manual, pulling out 35 horses and 60 lb-ft of torque with 9 psi of boost.

The result then was a new total output of 225 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque, compared to the nearly square 190 horses and 191 lb-ft of torque. We can only imagine how much more power the 11th-gen Civic can put out with Hondata’s FlashPro once the six-speed manual comes into play.
