Honda Teases Us with Drool-Worthy, One-Off FK8 Civic Type RR

By -

Honda probably won’t ever produce this amazing Type RR, but at least you can replicate it pretty easily.

It wasn’t all that long ago when Honda U.K. shocked us by revealing it had commissioned Ralph Hosier Engineering to construct a wild, off-road version of the venerable FK8 Civic Type R. But while we were focused on that madness, we nearly missed Honda’s second ace up its sleeve – an amazing Type RR of sorts. Built by Team Dynamics Motorsport, the enhanced Type R joined its overlanding brother at the 2019 SMMT Test Day at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England.

It was there that YouTuber HondaPro Jason was able to take a closer look at this drool-worthy machine. He was even allowed to take it for a test drive and shares his thoughts here. But first, let’s take a look at specs. Team Dynamics addressed performance by adding a Superchips ECU, ITG induction system, PWR intercooler, Dream sports cat, and Scorpion exhaust. Those enhancements resulted in an impressive 400 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque.

To handle that extra juice, the crew also installed Goodridge stainless performance braided brake hoses, Eibach Pro performance springs, and adjustable anti-roll bars and rear camber arms. Dunlop DZ03G track day tires wrapped around Team Dynamics’ 19” Pro-Race lightweight competition-derived wheels help keep it all glued to the road.

So how does all of that add up in terms of driving dynamics? “It is quick and it handles insane,” Jason notes. “So much fun. I love this. Team Dynamics knocked this out of the park. It’s still driveable. It’s still fun. It handles great. It was truly amazing.”

Of course, we shouldn’t really be surprised that the FK8 Honda Civic Type R responds well to mods. After all, we’ve seen what some minor upgrades can do. But it seems that this well-balanced example might have just raised the bar even further.

“We’re familiar with the race-winning FK8,” said James Rodgers, team manager at Team Dynamics. “However, we wanted to showcase what can be extracted from the car with just a few light modifications. The standard car, which we call a race car for the road, is so competent that it really doesn’t take much to take it to the next level.”

Sadly, we doubt that Honda will actually consider building this Type RR. But hey, you never know. And in the meantime, it’s nice to know that with a few non-serious mods, you can at least build your own version!
