Honda Civic Mugen RR Is A Modern Classic

Tuning community loves the eighth-gen Civic and its formidable powertrain, but is this Honda Civic Mugen RR really worth $127K?

Eighth-gen Honda Civic sported a timeless design which only added to its appeal. Civic’s versatile platform made it a tuner’s dream, and with the right performance upgrade, the car’s formidable powertrain could be tuned to give sports cars a run for their money. Even though the tuning potential of the FD2 Honda Civic was only limited by one’s imagination, many enthusiasts turned to Mugen for inspiration.

This also resulted in Civic Mugen RR becoming one of the most sought-after import nameplates in the world. Recently, Heathfield, UK-based car dealer Torque GT listed an exquisite example of Mugen RR up for sale. The British car dealer is selling a JDM-only model, which has quite an interesting backstory.

The car was based on Honda’s FD2 Civic Type R, and back in ‘07, the Japanese automaker announced that it will partner with the prolific Honda tuner, Mugen Motorsports to produce a more hardcore version of the model. The Civic Mugen RR was the result of this collaboration, and only 300 examples of this special edition model were ever produced.

The car was only available in a vibrant Milano Red paint job, and Torque GT’s Mugen RR sports its original color scheme. Mugen also updated the car’s bodywork. In addition to installing an aluminum hood, the tuner also replaced the stock bumpers with carbon fiber replacements, which reduced the car’s overall weight down to just 2767 lbs.

The car rides on Mugen Motorsports’ 18-inch 7-spoke rims that flaunt a black finish. Interestingly enough, owners were required to prove that they own a genuine Mugen RR to procure replacement bumper and wheels. The company employed this practice to ensure that FD2 owners could not build Mugen Civic RR replicas. The rear-end is dominated by a prominent carbon wing, and several Mugen logos adorn the car’s bodywork.

The FD2 Mugen RR was powered by a 2-liter K20A inline-four powerplant which produced 237 HP of power and 161 lb-ft of peak torque in its factory tune. Torque GT’s Mugen Civic RR is number 24 of the 300 examples that were ever produced and is priced at just over $127,000 ( £89,990 based on current exchange rates). After it was imported the car spent most of its time in storage and only has less than 33,000 miles on the odometer.
