We Talk Cars with Honda Racer Tom O’Gorman

What part of the race would you say is the most stressful? Middle of the night? One hour to go?

I’d say the start is one of the more stressful times, because everyone has a pace to settle into and the field of cars is still bunched up. The middle of the night is actually quite peaceful. Everyone has settled into their groove and any car that was going to break has probably broken already.

But the real stressful time is test day. Anyone new to the race is still trying to figure out the car, and the track, and you’re just hoping that nothing is going to break while trying to turn a fast lap.

With the wide variety of cars on track, you have a big disparity in speeds from the slowest, to the fastest classes. Our car put us right in the middle of that speed range and with 60 cars, you were constantly passing and being passed by other cars. There’s no real down time. But since the cars ran well, there were no stressful moments during the race.

Honestly, I saw the race as the best combination of pro, amateur and club racing where you have teams like Flying Lizard, but then you also have just a bunch of friends that can be campaigning a Spec Miata. It was so much fun.
