Default [FAQ] The Official Exhaust Thread

Ok I've noticed that there are a lot of "What kind of exhaust should I get?" or "Help me pick A vs B" or "Does anyone know about X exhaust". I figure lets make an Official thread where we can centralize all the information pertaining to exhausts. That way we can clear up some of the clutter of this forum.

I do think that this thread should not be used for discussion though. It is simply an informational post where users will post up their setup and reactions (I will get into the criteria later). If you want anymore information about a persons setup, contact them directly via PM or email. This will also help us so that there isn't 20 pages of arguments over this exhaust over that. This is a thread of personal experience! None of this

Quote, originally posted by stunna »

Well my boy is runnin this and it sounds tite y0!

kinda crap. We want real feedback and opinions. With that in mind here is the criteria for posting. Please try to fill in ALL the fields so we can get a good idea of what the exhaust is like:

Exhaust: Name and piping size
where you bought it: The website or if you bought it from a private party then just say private party.
cost: this will help give us an idea of where the cheapest place might be.
fitment: Was it a direct bolt on or was there custom welding done?
is it for a NA or FI car?: self explanatory
sound level/quality: 1-10 rating on the sound.
1-Stock
2-
3-RS*R Ex Mag / Apex WS
4-
5-Greddy Evo
6-
7-
8-Apex N1
9-
10- Open header

and then say if it's raspy, deep, overpowering and brief description of noise level in your car. Also if you have sound or movie clips of fly bys/idling/revving/in car sounds please post up the links!
pros/cons: Here will be the meat and potatoes of your post. List all your likes and dislikes with the exhaust. Was it a PITA to install? Rusting problems? HAngers breaking? Get hassled by the cops about it? CARB legal? Be as informative as possible so we know what the exhaust is like.

Pictures? LINKS ONLY! No need in killing the 56k-er's out there. It'll also be helpful in not screwing with the page size and post's being skewed because of a pic that is way to big in size.

I'm hoping that this turns into a very useful thread with lots of info and tech here for everyone to turn to. If it works out really well maybe we can extend this idea to other mods! If you have questions about any of these please feel free to pm me. Thanks!

-Mike

OBX Racing Mugen Style Muffler w/ JDM ITR piping and a test pipe
Bought it off of ebay from SSAutoChrome
Actual muffler was about $90 shipped if I remember right, plus I the bends from an ITR axle back...but that shouldn't cost too much
Fitment is good...custom welding
Good for NA...don't know about FI...but I'm goin to try it in the near future
The sound is fairly quiet...I'd give it a 2 or 3...mine is about a 3 or 4 since I have a test pipe. It sounds pretty deep and doesn't even get loud at all till your on WOT and in the high rev range.
Haven't seen any drawbacks to this setup...I'm pretty happy with it. I like it because I never have any problems from cops, and I'm not settin off car alarms like I was with my N1 on my stealth.

If there is anyone in the Bay Area that would like to meet up and take a video or sound clip of my exhaust...that would be great. I get a lot of people asking for them and I can't deliver. Send me an email at stirrfriedkat@yahoo.com

Del Sol Si

Exhaust: GReddy SP. 2.25" piping.
Where bought: private party
cost: $300 new
fitment: direct bolt on
application: N/A
sound level: 3-4

its pretty quiet. can be a little loud in high RPM's. since the Del Sol has such a small cabin, its going to be a little louder than a 4-5 seater car. i've also heard its because of the trunk (like a speaker box).

pro/cons: i don't really have any dislikes. i do like that it's CARB legal, so no hassle with smog. not loud enough to catch a cop's ears (around my area anyway).

1995 coupe, SOHC

Exaust: Custom cat-back

Bought: muffler (ebay)-- custum piping (2 3/4) crush bend, no resignator

Cost: 50$ for the muffler and 125$ (with labor) for a muffler shop to do the piping

Fitment: Fits perfect (custum welded)

Application: N/A

Sound Level: 6-7 --- in my opinion and for those who have heard it, it sounds
great. If i start my car and get on the gas before everything is warmed up (engine) it sounds raspy at hight RPMS. But after driving for 5 min it sounds really deep and throaty up and down the RPM range..

It was cheaper than alot of exausts, some say the piping is too big for N/A but i like how it sounds and it does its job..

If anyone ever thinks of open header I recommend not to do it(only saying this bc he sas open header as an option). I had my header open for my 00 Si before, loud as a mofuck, fumes going in your car and your breathing it. You can get knocked da fudge out. Very scary when you drive it around and after you put it back on. You don't really feel any real power gains in your car. If you think I'm lying will at first all I had was I/H/E. Then after I had it back on I got ITR IM/ ITR TB/ ITR CAMS/ VAFC/ MSD 6A set up/ JG sprockets advanced/ and some aem pulleys. I felt no power anmore but I did burn a couple s2k's until my baby got stolen and never recovered. RIP

Exhaust: Espelir JGT500
Where bought: private party
cost: $500 new(optionsauto.com)
fitment: direct bolt on
application: N/A
sound level: 8

This exhuast is pretty loud. However, it is not raspy. Its quite deep. At idle to 2500 you can feel it in your stomach outside the car. Higher revs it screams. Its a large canister but I like the way it looks. Im lowered about 3" and I dont scrape unless I do something stupid. Heres a link with pics and vids

Ok i decided to write up a little review on the exhaust since everytime someone see's a pic of my car they always ask questions about the exhaust

i picked the exhuast up a couple months ago from prostreet online while they were running a special for Honda-Tech. 538 shipped

The exhaust i was running at the time was a Apexi N1.

The RSR came in very clean. Piping had no flaws in it what so ever. Nice coating on it and it has some durability. I took a hammer and was hitting the piping all the way around and barely left a little scuff.

Weight. my apexi N1 weighed 53lbs. the RSR weighed 41 lbs

Install issues. the only issue that i ran into with installing the exhaust is that the gasket was not big enough for the JDM DC 4-1 that i was running. Your going to need a friend or a muffler shop to be able to do the install since the exhaust came in 2 pieces. Be sure to leave at least a 2 figer tip gap along the gas tank of the piping.

Clearance issues. Everyone expected me to have the thing destroyed within a week. Its going on 2 months that ive had the exhaust and not one dig or damage to the exhaust in any way. I go through subdivisions daily with mildly high speed bumps. i dont take granny time to go over them i go over them like normal.

This exhaust has alot more clearance than my Apexi N1. I had the N1 dented and scratched within the first 2 weeks.

Performance. Ive noticed a little gain all through the power band. This has to be the straightest Manufactured exhaust for a civic. it only has one 32 degree angle bend in it and that is all.

Overall i am very happy with this exhaust. I also like to entertain people with it sometimes with it throwing flames out

Here are some videos of the exhaust. to view video's you right click and save as.

97 del Sol with D16y8

Exhaust: Tanabe Super Racing Medalion
where you bought it: Guy from H-T.com
cost: 475 shipped (NIB)
fitment: bolt-on, however shipping bent it a little so I had to bend it back
is it for a NA or FI car?: N/A now, going turb-ho in a few months.
sound level/quality: 6-7 w/silencer, 8-9 w/o...sound is great. Very deep and loud without silencer...no raspyness

pros/cons: It was a great buy. Silencer will make your girl happy. Few scrapes on canister due to low car. Looks great, and a full stainless exhaust in anyshape is a good upgrade. I would buy it again.

Edit...now with pics (Dark green one with no spoiler):

2000 Civic Si

Exhaust: Spoon N1 2.5in
where you bought it: private party on H-T.
cost: $280 shipped used
fitment: perfect
is it for a NA or FI car?: NA
sound level/quality: 7 for level 1,000,000,000 for sound quality!

PROS: the sound is great! not raspy or buzzy or farty or anything. smooth, but can be almost burbley (SP?) at times. like a cross between a sport bike and a ferrari mixed with a lil bit o honda. I have a stock header with test pipe and stock b-pipe (soon to be replaced by jdm 4-1 and T1R SS resonated b-pipe and SS resonated test pipe). stock tip size and no bling bling canister, but fully functional .

CONS: little loud (but my car is COMPLETELY stripped from the front seats back) and would probably be louder with a header and b-pipe on NA(probably closer to a 9).

Exhaust: JIC Bullet stainless steel canister (3.15" inlet/4.5" tip) with custom 2.5" piping
Where you bought it: http://www.jic-magic.com
Cost: $220.00
Fitment: PERFECT...and it even comes with a flange! Custom welding was also used.
Is it for a NA or FI car?: NA
Sound level/quality: 10 (numbingly loud)

My setup is definitely not carb legal! I'm also running an AEM ITR CAI, Greddy stainless steel header, and no catalytic converter. At WOT this thing makes my ears bleed...but whatever...I LOVE IT !
