That guy posted on the Corral last week or so - bad wreck. He apparently put two wheels off, then corrected, then slid off the track sideways. Left tires dug in and rolled him several times. His seat actually broke during all this, and he ended up basically sitting on the steering wheel, holding the roof up with his head. The metal was caved around his head, and he had to be cut out with the Jaws of Life...

The instructor's helmet came off mid-roll as well. He was extremely lucky - head lacerations, but nothing more serious. Some of the more detailed pics he has on his website show a good amount of blood on the passenger side - I'm amazed there weren't more serious injuries.

If no one else finds it, I'll try to dig up the link at work tomorrow (have it in email somewhere).

Good God. That might be the worst one I've seen to date. I'm glad the driver and instructor came out unscathed.

(Side note...Andrew, I thought you ditched the Excursion...?)

Holy cow, those are some seriously lucky folks. Does anyone know if they were wearing harnesses or not? That's one seriously scary picture.

Memories of June's Summit Point accident... Remember the pancaked E36 M3?

BTW, that was in Willow Springs (big track) in Rosamond, CA not Buttonwillow. I believe it happened during a NASA (LA Region) event last weekend.

I looked in the car afterwards, and no, they were not using harnesses as far as I could tell. I think if they had been, they would have been seriously injured or killed.

BTW, this is Willow Springs, not Buttonwillow (as it says on the thread's title.)

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Does it seem to anyone else that there are more and more incidents at drivers' ed events than in years past? Or is it simply because there are more events? Hell, maybe it's just the Internet's uncanny ability to spread bad news quickly.

One other thing - how fast a corner was it where the car dug in, MPH wise? 'Cause it looks like that car rolled a LOT of times.

I don't know how fast he was going, but I exit that turn at around 100MPH, indicated of course.

that is exactly why me and a co worker were talkin about building a SCCA IT legal cage for the Corolla earlier today. He just finished one in his Miata and has all the dia's for my size car. Now's he's just gotta come up with a price for me. Glad to see everyone was ok though. Our local NASA event is held at the Nashville superspeedway where exitin the tri oval some of the vette's (esp my boss's) are seeing speeds of close to 150-160mph, some miatas are doing 110. thats why before I hit the track I'm have a bar or most likely a full cage installed.

Found the link ---> http://www.corral.net/forums/showthr...&threadid=7228

For the clicky-impaired, here's his story:

Just thought I would share a little with you guys. I was at willow springs raceway this weekend running my car around the track. Last run of the day, about 5 laps in, me and my instuctor were going around turn 2. Exiting the corner at full throttle in 3rd gear, I swung the car to the left side of the track, just like you are supposed to do. When I got to the outside of the track, I accidentally drove over where the pavement meets the sand, and I lost control of my car. It started to point to the right, at the other side of the track, and the whole car started sliding left (driver door first). I ended up in the dirt on the otherside of the road (inside of turn 2) at about 70 mpg. I slid I don't know how many hundreds of feet in the sand, and then my car was pitched and started to roll. I don't know how many times I rolled, but to make a long story short, we ended up on the roof, and I can remeber the roof caving in on my head. The force of the roof hiting my head forced my face to my crotch, and actually destroyed the seat. We came to a stop, and I was actually sittin on my steering wheel, and my legs were somewhere above the dashboard, and my helmet was pinned between the roof, and the door. I couldn't move a single muscle, and I could feel the weight of the car on my helmet. I was trapped in the car for about 15/20 minutes, and I had to be cut free.

Please please, if you are going to be tracking your car, get a seat, get a harness, and get a cage.

The paramedics said that they have seen crashes that are not as bad, come out 10X worse, and that neither of us should of survived. Neither me nor my instructor came out of the wreck with a single broken bone, although I am bruised from head to toe. My instuctors helmet actually came off mid-roll, (becuause it was too big) and he ended up with massive lasserations to his head. All in all this is what you call a "cheap lession". The Stang is gone, no biggy, we are both still here.

Needless to say, it was the single scarriest thing I have ever been through, see for yourself...
