Default 1990 Honda Civic 4.7 & 4.9 FD

I think back in December someone was trying to get a group of people together for a purchase of 4.7 and/or 4.9 FD for the 89-91 Honda Civic/CRX. What ever happened to that, cause I'm still interested. I couldn't find the old post.

Thanks

I believe 4.73 FD's are available through ATS and Houseman (Sound right?), but the 4.9's were only available at the time from SRR for 92+ Hydro trans.

What company was the group buy going to be through? And I assume it was going to be for a 4.9 FD for the 88-91 cables?

I don't know what company the group was going through, but yes 88-91 cable. I'm not too interested in the 4.9 as I am in the 4.7 for under $950. If I remember correctly we where talking about sub $500 range.

I have owned three Houseman built 4.7s in different cars over the years and paid $1250 each for them years ago and thought they were worth the money. To me, $950 sounds like a smokin' deal and $500 a reason to simply stock up if I had that kind of money sitting around. If you have a serious road racing CRX/Civic, this is a basic requirement to run up front.

Not doubting in the least bit that it's worth it's weight in gold, but I just had a motor built this winter, so have a hard time convincing the wife to let me spend another grand

Special Projects Motor Sports is currently in the process of obtaining final drives from SRR that will fit the 88-91 SOHC Civic/CRX. The price will be right. MUCH less than $950.00.

I have no affiliation with them, but am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the first shipment.

You may contact Jeff at kiwiowen@hotmail.com Tell him I sent you!!

This is fantastic news for grassroots level honda guys. Pair this with one of the OBX Quaifish LSD's, and you have a fully developed "race" transmission for improved touring or other such foolishness.

Regards,

Sorry to give the impression that it included the OBX LSD or something. To my knowledge, Special Projects (kiwi) does not sell, supply, support, or even condone the use of the OBX. AFAIK, at least.

I didn't realize kiwi didn't sell the OBX, but I knew the deal did not include the OBX at the time.

Thanks though. You gave me the information I was looking for.

I'm pleased to announce that Special Projects Motor Sports has come to an exclusive arrangement with SRR, and we will soon have available the 4.7 & 4.9 Final drives for the '88-'91 CRX/Civic ZC/D16 Cable Trans.
We will be producing the 4.7 First, as it seems to be the most desired ratio for ITA, and Honda Challenge H4.
We are able to hold the price of our first shipment at $475.00 +Shipping and they will be available on a first come first served basis. These should be here by May 14th. We are now also taking orders for the 4.9 Final Drives.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement.

Will they work with the 4th Gen 4-speed box for us ITCers D15B1 motors? If so I WANT one for sure and a second possibly.

Yes, these will work in any L3 cable tranny, including the 4-speed that came in the 4th gen. Civic Std. Just be sure that when you are obtaining an LSD for this 4-speed tranny to specify that you will need the diff w/ the smaller bearings (35mm, I believe, versus 40mm on the Si). As a side note, I've heard that Quaife will no longer be making the LSD for the 4th gen 4-speed trannies.

Thanks Sam. I had heard about the whole Quaiffe thing also. Right now I run a Phantom slip, but I'm not willing to put the 4.7 in there with the Phantom slip. Don't want to destroy it. I think my only option is OPM since Quaiffe stopped making the 35mm bearing. All they make now is the 40mm.

Thanks again

Have to point out that the SRR 4.9 listed for the 92+ Civic WILL fit in an 88-91 L3 box without issue. The SRR countershaft we got from Kiwi was dimensionally within the tolerances listed in the oe factory repair manual. Makes a heck of deal when coupled to an OBX diff .

Sorry for the threadjack but....

So are you guys actually running the obx diff. Is it holding up to race abuse. I would love to get this for my grm challenge crx for open track days but haven't bought one due to no real first hand race results and track abuse reports. Maybe I just missed them but anyone actually racing/hard track day with one????

All of them? I talked to Bisi who had managed to put the SRR 4.9 final drive in a cable trans, but he said he needed to use shims of some sort to make it work?

If this is the case, what will be different about the new ones?

I can't speak for what Bisi did but the SRR 4.9 countershaft has the same diameters for all the splines and bearing surfaces. This was the L3 5 Speed tranny from the Si. No shimming required. No issues with it in about 8 hours of racing an ITA CRX Si. No whines or other strange noises. I'll be changing the tranny oil prior to the next race weekend to examine the fluid. The OBX diff has been in during the same time and again no issues to speak of. Who'd have thought you could get a Quaife knock-off and a 4.9 for a grand total of $850, including diff bearings and diff shim?

The reason we went to the trouble of having a batch of 4.9 & 4.7 SRR Final Drives made for us, is because everyone was getting different results! You (Mr Noodles)appear to have had no problems fitting the Later Final Drive to the Cable Tranny? Others have said Absolutely No Way! will it fit! I don't doubt for a moment that you were successful. There is just enough manufacturing discrepancies in the various G/Boxes for it to be possible...
We have tried a couple of times and Yes... They almost fit? in some Gearboxes... So we decided that for Racing, Almost is not good enough! Soon there will be no guesswork required. The small amount of machining that is required to make the Late Model FD's fit the Early gearboxes needs to be carried out before the hardening and heat treatment process is carried out.
Thanks to everyone for their support.
