i have a humming/howl noise from the rear, not the tires i know. thinking i might have to swap the wheel bearing.
Do they ever where out in a honda???
Any suggestions is most appreciated

also, the previous owner drove it on dirt roads a bit. perhaps causing a wheel bearing to wear??

yes still rotate tires and see if the noise moves if not its more then likely wheel bearing.

Jack up the car and try to move the wheel, if it moves in and out, then it's the bearing. If not it's probably something else, but it could still be the bearing. You can get a bearing off ebay pretty cheap.

ok, if the wheel moves in and out, you have a huge problem, the wheel it self could fall off. most of the time a wheel bearing is not that bad.

the easiest way to find which bearing it is, is to "load" each bearing. what i mean by this is turn your car to the right, to get a majority of the weight to the left side of the car. If the noise gets louder when you load the left side(turn to the right) than the left rear wheel bearing is bad, if the noise gets quieter, than it is the left. do the same thing turning left(loading the right side) if the noise get louder it would be the right rear, and if it gets quieter, it is not the problem.

it is posible to have both wheel bearings go bad, so if it gets louder while loading either side, then it would be both.

hope this helps, good luck,
Schubs

ya it does get much louder when taking left turns, so it must be that back right bearing.
I will buy one and sum beers and have my mechanic come over to help me with this one, i have no expierience with wheel bearings...

THANKS FOR THE INPUT

the best way to check the wheel bearings is to jack up the back of the car, put your hand on the spring and spin the wheel. If you feel it vibrate or hear a groaning, its the bearing.

The bearing is easy to change on your car, especially if its drum brakes. However, you will need a large socket that doesnt come in most socket sets. Its either 32 or 36mm. I am pretty sure its 36 since that is what the front is, but it may be a 32.

If you have drums, remove the wheel, relove the drum, pop off the dust cap and unbolt it. Retorque it to 170ft-lbs. Try to use a torque wrench cause too much or not enough preload on the bearing causes more wear.

If you have rear disc, you need to remove the caliper and bracket assebly (2 14mm bolts) and set it aside, pull the rotor off and then unbolt the hub/bearing assembly.

Just move the stuff around. At some point it will run better, at some point it will bend your valves. Hope for the first, expect the second.
