DIY: Bumper plugs. Don't waste $25 at bumperplugs.com« » Reply  Edit

This is a DIY for those of you who live in states that don't require a front plate. It is possible that you may, like myself, discover a nasty hole in your bumper when you remove the front plate and mounting bracket.

This also serves as an "education instructional" for those of you who live in states that require a front plate.

First off, remove the plate if you have one on, and/or remove the plastic bracket. Or if the dealer was crappy, remove the two screws(or if you are using this guide for a different car). If they used the plastic bracket, there should be bolts and just a single center screw. Basically, take off whatever is in the front that you need to. There may be bolts in the grill that you'll need a ratchet or lug wrench of some sort to reach back and remove in order to take the bracket off.

Go to Home Depot, or you can try a different hardware store if you don't have a Home Depot. I only know for sure that Home Depot has them though. You'll need to go to the HARDWARE section and look for where the nuts and bolts are. You should find some metal drawers around there somewhere where this part can be located.

The bag is labled with the following:
PUSH IN FASTENER
.315"
NYLON

If that isn't enough to single it out or find it and you must ask an employee, the UPC code is
030699459384

For 35 cents, each bag comes with two and they look like this:

The one shown is painted of course.

This is how the part goes in:

Paint the part with either touch up paint or spray paint. I sanded and smoothed it out before I painted it because there was a little line edge in the middle from manufacturing. You can buff and clear coat it if you want but I just painted a few layers.

Sitting it in pliers as it dries.

Touch up paint from parts department of local Honda dealer. Roughly $10 after tax. I needed it anyway because of a scuff on my rear bumper

I'll post up a picture of it on my car when I get the camera from my girlfriend's house(these were taken with a webcam).

Edit: Crap, can some mod remove "draft" from the topic please? thank you.

picture of them installed?

one other option is asking for them at the dealership where you bought the car. they have them laying around. and/or if they dont, they can order em for you. for less than the $10 that you paid for the plugs and paint.

but good work on the DIY.

I called the dealer for a plug. They didn't have one, they said they only had something that might work and they were going to charge me for it. And I have to grab my gf's digital camera to get a picture of it installed. I'll use my crappy phone camera for now I guess.

some parts employees are idiots.

you need to walk in, and look at the bumper section pictures on the computer with them.

you'll notice which part you need, have him click on them, and you're done.

lemme call some friends to get the actual part numbers.

what color do you need? as the different painted models require different part numbers.

what you did looks great though.

take pics of them installed. it'll clean up the front end a lot .

Well I also looked at the diagram and it wasn't there for the 06-07 Civics. I did see a diagram of an 00 with a plug though. And I don't need the part anymore anyway, but I appreciate the offer greatly.

i think you're right.... i couldnt find them in the catalog either.
i'll have to ask the tech that installs the license plates if they come in with plugs.

your idea turned out great. i dont want to take that away from you at all.

good DIY, my uncle ordered one from bumperplugs.com when i saw it i noticed how easy it would be to make your own. The only thing i really don't like is the fact that there is only one hole, makes it look like a cyclops once patched. I think i might leave the plate on if my bumper was drilled....

why don't you just take it to a body shop and have them fill it and paint over it. or those guys that come to dealer ship and fix up the used cars and prob. fix it for about 50 bucks. the plug is nice, but if i dont have to have a front plate i would rather spend the money and make the hole not be there

I wonder why they drilled that to begin with. We just use the two bottom 10mm bolts and never have any problems securing the plate bracket. Oh well..

That's the whole point of a DIY; to not spend money.

Giving this a try myself. The paint was $7.51 with tax and the bag of fasteners were $34 cents. I mean for a measly 8 bucks it's gotta be worth a try, plus the touch up paint could come in handy down the road anyway.

Has anyone tried to actually fill the hole and sand/smooth it and then use touch up paint?
