Mothers paint cleaning Clay system« » Reply  Edit

Hey guys, this new topic is for the archives, because I know how many times it has been done before.

I figured I would put this here and help out everybody that wants to clean their paint up with the use of clay.

I bought this kit, being a little skeptical that it would remove some old crud from my paint. To my suprise, it removed everything I tried to remove. Things like road tar, old bug splatter, water spots, and minor scuffs and scratches, that would not come out with regular hand washing and detailing.

Here is what the kit I bought looks like:

It comes with 8 ounces of clay, a bottle of quick detailer (which you use as the lubricant for the clay), and a small bottle of carnuba wax.

For those that do not know, it is wise to split the clay in half, that way, if you drop it, you won't have to throw the whole thing away. Pat it out kinda like you would a hamburger, into a small circle shape, and hold it in the fingers of your hand like this:

Then, take the quick detailer, and spray it liberally on the area to be clayed. Then, in short, slow strokes, move the clay across the paint, using the detailer as lubricant. Do not touch any spots that are dry, but use the detailer as nessecary.

You should feel a grainy texture as the feel to the clay sliding over the paint will be rough. Keep going over it until it is smooth. What you are feeling is the clay actually picking up the dirt and crud that is on your clearcoat. If ever you notice excessive dirt (black crap) in the clay, knead it in your fingers until you have fresh clay to work with.

Do that to whatever areas you want, and wipe the detail spray off with a microfiber or a terry cloth towel.

After you are done, you will need to put a good coat of wax on the areas clayed, because the clay will actually pull off any old polish with the dirt and stuff.

Impressions: Wow. What can I say. This car feels brand new to me. Just like the day I drove it off the showroom floor. The clearcoat feels like wet glass. It is simply amazing how much of a difference this stuff makes. It pulled off crud that has been on my car since early this year. It removed most all of the road tar on the lower rocker panels, bug splatter on the hood, headlights and mirrors, as well as hard water spots and water streaks.

If you have a good eye, you can really see the sheen in the paint at these angles. The pictures really don't do it any justice, but maybe that is just operator error. Anyways, here they are:

Like I mentioned, I was VERY skeptical that it would work, because I had never done it before. But there were certain spots on the car, mainly the front bumper and the left lower rocker panel that had stuff I had never been able to remove. And the claying removed it like it was simply water on the car.

I will take more daylight photos tommorow, and see if I can capture the caliber of the color. It simply amazed me to the core. I was like, wow. I had spent about 2.5 hours all together, washing, drying, claying, polishing and buffing the car.

This has made me a believer I will use it more and more now. I had never used it up until this point, because I always thought it was a gimmick or something. But this is awesome, and I WILL reccommend it to ANYBODY looking to brighten up their car.

Did you have to polish before waxing?

I have still yet to finish detailing. I have used the carnuba cleaner wax that came with the kit so far. I need to put a few coats of wax on it from here, and I will be done.

Looks good. I used the same exact clay bar kit on my car this past Sunday. Excellent results on my EBP.

Yep, The clay is the best. I was really suprised at the before and after. It works great on older cars and I would recommend it to everyone. You can feel the difference.

If you spent the time to fix it Fix it better than it was

Nice job there, Kev'. I was just as amazed as you are, when I did my first claying'. I need to do it soon, before Winter hits us real hard, because I'd like to clean off my Fall gatherings (in terms of road crud), and prepare my paint for it's annual Winter beating.

what about having 400 coats of wax overtop of some road tar? will this do the trick, or do I need to remove the wax first?

This stuff WILL remove the wax. You have to put a nice coat of wax back on after you run the clay over it.

Very nice. I've used both Mothers and Meguiars clay products and both are awesome!

Although I wouldn't just add a new layer of wax over the clayed surfaces, but I'd redo the whole 3-step process over the clayed surfaces, not just wax (Paint cleaner, Polish, Carnauba Wax). This insures a deep shine and protection.

That kit was on sale at Advance Auto Parts for 15.99. With my employee discount, I got it for 12.99 plus tax.
