hey guys,
i have a 2003 ex coupe & am going to get tein h techs & tokico blues...
what would be a good tire size for 15's? or what would look good w/just a one inch drop?
planning on getting a set of falken ziex 912's.
i've been debating between 205/60/15 & 205/55/15...

Well, you don't say what model car you have. I'm going to assume that your "2003 ex coupe" is a Civic EX and not an Accord EX.

Your car came with 185/65-15 stock tires. Tire selection is somewhat limited in that. You can go with 195/60-15 (1.0 percent smaller outer diameter than stock) or 205/60-15 (0.9 percent larger than stock). The 205/55 is too small (2.4 percent smaller than stock). 195/60 might be a better choice for a lowered car, although I doubt that the 205/60 would rub with a relatively mild drop (but you would have to try it to be sure).

If you live in Modesto, why are you getting all-season tires like the Ziex 912? All-seasons are designed for people who need to use the same tires in snow and frigid cold in the winter that they do in warmer temperatures the rest of the year. The downside of that additional flexibility is that they don't perform (outside of snow and cold) as well as summer tires. If you occasionally go skiing in the mountains and have to drive on snow-covered roads, then you need all-seasons; otherwise, summer tires will give you much better performance.

If you don't need all-season tires, I recommend the Yokohama ES100 in 195/60-15 ($82/tire at the Tire Rack; I don't see it on the Discount Tire website but you could call and ask). It's a very good summer tire and will give much better performance than any all-season tire.

If you need all-season tires, I recommend the Kumho ASX in 195/60-15 ($46/tire at the Tire Rack; I don't see it on the Discount Tire website but you could call and ask). It's much better in every way than the Falken Ziex ZE-912.

yeah, i have a civic...good call

most likely i will be getting the 205/60/15's.

you have a good point on me not needing all season tires, i guess i feel more "safe" having them on?
anywho, as for performance it's not too big of a deal for me. i don't race or anything, i just want something that looks good & clean.
i'll definitely look into the yokohamas...what about BFGoodrich g-Force Sport?

great. now, i gotta debate if i want all season or summer tires

thanks for your input!

Not a big deal either way. The 195/60 may be cheaper, though.

Only if there's a chance you might drive somewhere with snow. Even in rain, a really good summer tire grips better than all-seasons.

The performance of the ES100 is MUCH better than the g-Force Sport.

i'm assuming you had a set of yokohamas,
how do the es100 perform in the rain?
that would be my only concern...

Yes, I'm on my second set. They do fine in the rain. (That's not just my opinion, but also those of many people posting in this topic.)

In Western Washington weather the avs es 100 sucked. My set of tires in a 205/50r15 kept spinning from the line just trying to go no matter how nice i was on my clutch. Performance in the rain wasn't much better either. Dry handling was as expected decent for the money... That is just my opinion

Well, they're not drag radials. They're very good "bang for the buck" street tires. Are there stickier tires for the dragstrip? Sure! You can get drag radials designed for the dragstrip, but they'll only last you about 5K miles, or supersticky tires like the Falken Azenis RT-615, but they'll only last you about 10-12K miles. And neither one will do diddlysquat in rain. And neither one is available in the size that the OP needs.

Better than what? They're very good street tires in rain, and better in rain than any tire that grips better at the dragstrip.

The ES100 is good at "bang for the buck", with pretty good dry traction and excellent wet traction. It also has the very best performance the OP can get in the sizes his car needs. There is NO stickier tire available in 195/60-15 or 205/60-15. None. Zero. Nada.

You should be able to get anywhere from 25K to 40K miles from either one. We actually got over 40K miles on the set on our GS-R. And the ES100 will give you much MUCH better performance than the g-Force Sport.
