Default strange tire wear w/ pics

I noticed that there was a noticable howling sound coming from the rear of my 96 hx, it got louder with speed. I thought it may be a wheel bearing going bad. But when I went to rotate the tires, I found this:

Every other tread block has excessive wear. Both rear tires had this on the inside tread blocks. The car was driven into a dusty garage floor. you can see that every other tread is worn more and is still clean because it did not contact the dusty floor.
The tires have been used for maybe 8k miles on my 96 hx. The car has stock suspension. The wheels/tires were used on my lowered EG for a while before this with no problem at all.
Now they are on the front of the car (ek) and the howling is coming from the front.
(At least my wheel bearings are ok!)

The tires are Pirelli all season directional (good tires) and are properly balanced.

what could cause this strange tire wear? I've never seen anything like it before

That phenomenon is called "cupping" and it's most commonly caused by a problem with your suspension (could be wheel bearings, or bushings that are shot, or a bent control arm, or shocks that are shot, that sort of thing). You can read more about causes of cupping on this website (which was written about trucks but cars with tires cupping have all the same causes).

If you take your car to a mechanic to have him find the problem, remember to point out to him which corner the bad tire was on before you rotated them.

I bought the car @ 104k mi and have put about 14k more on it. It reminds me of a big hoopty the way it kind of 'floats' when it rides. I thought it was cause I was used to my lowered civic. But maybe it is time for some new springs/shocks. I'll take another look at the wheel bearings too. Both rear tires were worn the exact same way on the inside.

it can also be done by not rotating your tires as well. More commonly seen on big trucks with bigger tires!!!! But can also happen to honda's as well as well as the above mentioned

Cupping cannot result solely from not rotating your tires.

a strut dampens and is also a locating member of the suspension. his civic has shocks not struts...

Lack of rotation does not cause cupping. If you have seen cupping, on trucks or cars, they may not have rotated their tires, but that's not the cause of the cupping. They undoubtedly had a suspension problem of some sort which caused the cupping.

The only thing that lack of rotation causes is uneven treadwear - usually because the tires on the drive wheels wear faster than the other tires, so the tires aren't all wearing at the same rate.

Yeah check your shocks or bushings. We get plenty of those at our shop and lots of people complain its our installation

Alignment can cause uneven tire wear, but not the particular wear pattern (cupping) shown in the photo.

However, the suspension problem that is causing the problem might also throw off the alignment. Once you fix the suspension problem, it would be a good idea to check the wheel alignment (and adjust if necessary).
