Default Welding exhaust downpipe on my first try, use "slip-fit" sleeves as a backup?

Hi guys,

My Hobart Handler 140 is on the way here from cyberwelds, so within a week I'll start welding my own downpipe and exhaust. My main concern is since this is my first time welding I'm afraid I wont do a good enough job and the exhaust system will fall apart while I'm driving it.

I was thinking, that instead of welding the piping end to end, I would slip on a sleeve on top of the two pipes and weld that together instead. And maybe I would even get some of those U shaped pipe clamp thingies you see at autozone or NAPA. For those that dont quite understand...It would be kinda like how you silicone couplers on the intercooler piping. But instead of silicone, the coupler would be made of stainless steel. And on either end of th SS "coupler" it would be welded to the piping underneath. And instead of simple clamps, I would use those exhaust clamps as added protection.

What do you guys think? am I just being paranoid? this was one of the things I was thinking about doing. I also thought about doing making up some brackets/hangers for my downpipe that goes under the oil pan. That way there isn't too much stress on the downpipe which comes right out of the turbine.

EDIT: I didn't think of this until after I had bought all my DP and DT piping. So if I had thought of this before I would have gotten slip fit piping. But now I just have to go with the SS coupler idea cause I dont wanna buy any more piping.

If it's you first time and it will make you feel better i'd say go for it. Most welded joints will fail due to vibration in the heat affected zone created by the actual weld process it's self. As one inch of weld will hold 7,000 pounds i'd be more worried about vibration. Make sure to use flexpipe after you header and you should be set.

just go to a muffler shop and get some scraps for free. practice making butt welds and then smash them with a hammer and cut them apart to make sure they are strong. you have the tools, why not learn to use them rather than making it overly comlicated? All you need is a little practice and you will see how easy it is to get a strong weld doing butt welds. hell, if it breaks, weld it back up!

Thanks for the replies guys

Right now I'm not very god at welding and telling a good weld from a bad weld. I'm afraid I'll look at my welds and think I have a good seam when I actually have a crappy one. And In my mind I picture my welds seperating at the inital downpipe bend and catching on something in the road and tearing up my whole sxhaust system and undercarraige.

When the HH 140 gets here I'll practice, and if I'm not confident enough I'l do the slip joints. Thanks for the tip too Bailhatch about whacking away at the welds. When I practived with my 90 AMP flux core welder I kinda just looked at my finished seam dn tugged on it a bit. I'll try beating on my welds with a hammer and see how well it holds.
