Default Burn-through control...

New welder here, looking for a few pointers. Problem I've had on a few occasions is burn through of a thiner gauge pipe when welding two sections (think downpipe) together. The cheap DP's on Ebay are that very thin chome like finish matieral and I was mating it to a section of plain old steel piping of a slightly thicker gauge, the edge of the thinner pipe melted right through leaving a hole that I had to fill, very ugly stuff. I'm assuming this means I need to reduce the temp conttrol on the welder, but then I worry about insufficient penetration on the thicker peice. Suggestions?

You only need to fully penetrate the thinner metal, the thicker metal has nothing to bond to past that point, so penetrating all the way through it does nothing but melt the thinner stuff.

Burn through means too much heat, you may be applying the correct heat/amperage for thicker metal but it is too much for the thinner stuff and you get burnthrough. Set amperage/heat control for the thinner metal as mentioned above.
