Re: Post your best welds!!!!!!!
anyone here using an everlast 250ex and want to give some opinions? I know the torch and pedal arent exactly desireable and people have modified the machine for WP and a better pedal but im between a Miller diversion 180 and the Everlast and im having a hard time. I know the miller is less powerful but it already has a nice torch and pedal where as the Everlast would end up over the cost of the Miller. This is standard hobby stuff, AL and stainless manifolds and roll cages. The miller is rated to 4.8mm thickness for AL and stainless so it would suit anything i needed it to.

Re: Post your best welds!!!!!!!
what type of tungsten and size of filler do you guys prefer on Aluminum?
Im using the E3 w/3/32" 4043 and feel like there has to be something better out there. Im not a fan on E3, wandering start ups mostly. Im looking for a tighter bead, for running stringers, so I can get more stringer beads on my practice pieces. Trivial, i know.
Ive been told to use 2% Thoriated? Is that correct?

I've been welding for a total of....21 hours. Taking an Arc/Gas welding class through the local community college. After this semester ends I'll be enrolling in Cal Trade Welding School.
So far, these are my 'best' welds.
This is a 6010 horizontal position 3 pass (supposed to be) joint weld. My electrode angles were a little too close to 90 on the fillet passes, resulting in a little too much space between the welds. The instructor had me run another 3 overlapping passes to fill in the bit of space and marked it good for credit.
Same thing, but a 7018 electrode. This is only 3 passes though, done properly enough to get credit.
To pass for credit we aren't striving for perfect welds. It's totally a beginner 'learn how to stick metal together' course.

Re: Post your best welds!!!!!!!
I finally made a decision on a welder and it came in yesterday. Decided to jump on into getting in broken in and getting a feel for it.
First bead with aluminum
Then I started working in runs and the starts and stops were giving me a little trouble at getting it uniform
Granted this was my first night with the machine I was happy with out of the box settings. Played with pps as well which is a really cool feature to have
Since i cant see the amperage, i decided to start a video log with my gopro. a video journal or sorts that i can review after time in the shop. Getting comfortable is something i am going to have to figure out. the chair i had wasnt optimal but it was better than the 5gallon bucket i had LOL. And i found its harder to slide your arms down wood than it is metal so ill be picking up a stainless top for my bench on saturday only with some practice scraps from a local fab shop.
I am really happy with my purchase and the guys i dealt with at my local welding supply (Craig @ WESCO) were amazing in helping me every step of the way. Cant thank the guys up there enough.
