note to self: alays grind metal wearing a face sheild
I just got back from the ER where they pulled a piece of metal out of my eye. I guess it got in this morning when grinding metal in class without a face sheild. eventually it embedded itself in the iris. it left a rust ring that needs to be drilled ouy basically. not fun.

Been there a few time too. I worked at my dad's clutch shop years ago and most every guy there had to have metal removed from their eye at least once. We had eye protection laying around everywhere not being used. After the first time you would think we'd learn the leason.
Now that I'm older I (almost) always were eye protection when it's called for.

I always wear saftey glasses, and usually a face shield when grinding. now that I think about it, it was probably at home where it happened beveling some pipe with no face shield at home. I kinda felt something in my eye but it didnt bother me. I guess a few hours later it got embedded.
today I have to go get the rust ring drilled out

What pisses me off, is that I'm **** about wearing eye (and ear) protection, and I still frequently get metal in my eyes when grinding or prepping metal. It's happened 3 times, and all three times I was wearing safety glasses. I guess I need to start using a full-face shield, but can you even see out of them?

Full face shield and safety glasses saved my life.
Angle grinder cutting disc exploded and missed my jugular by about 1/2". Had I not had the shield on it would have taken out the whole side of my neck.

did they have to use that little pen that spins at like 600 rpm to drill out the piece of metal?
there is nothing like starring up at the ceiling and seeing this damn drill come right at your eye. on the way home from the er room, we swung by hf to get a nice pair of glasses and a full face shield.

I try to wear eye protection at all times in the garage. Nothing like going to the ER for having been sprayed in the eyes with molten tin.

Ouch! I think getting metal in my eye was better than what happened to you.

yep, been there with that crazy little pen situation, metal stuck in my eye on tuesday and had no idea, weds morning eye gets ithcy and red, weds afternoon eyedoctor, they gave me some eyedrops to supposedly numb the eye but it actually tickled my eyeball still and made me blink, the doctor was getting pissed. now i wear my glasses and a full face shield all the time, but somehow stuff can still get in there, i dont know how but ive had some scares recently even with the faceshield.

well i was still wide awake, it just supposedly made your eye numb, but didnt work too good. Ive recently heard that the eye drops consist of 100% pure cocaine? im still skeptical as to if this is true or not.

You guys dont use the safety squint??? lol, been there with the eye die grinder myself. The worst pain I ever felt was one day I smashed out a big cat converter on the hoist and got that **** in my eyes (lots of it a few times), by the middle of the night I thought I was going to have to shoot myself.

yeah its weird how it does not really get to you til later that day. or maybe its the male mind telling yourself, "ill be ok in a bit".
i have not heard of the eye drops. eye die grinder is the perfect name. if i remember correctly i think he did say it spins at 600 rpm. im just glad he had a steady hand.
every once in a while, i find myself doing the safety squint and/or standing at a 90* angle to the grinder "thinking" the stuff still wont hit me, haha. thats when i hit myself in the face and put the shield and glasses on.

Re: note to self: alays grind metal wearing a face sheild
well, I went to see an eye doctor today (who BTW was a FINE chick early 30's I guess?, looked in here 20's but how can young can she possibly be?) anyways she gave me some much better eyedrops than the ER did, they really numbed them up good. at the ER it was hard for me to keep my eye still as I could feel stinging still, but with these I felt nothing and it was a breeze. she just picked out the rust with a needle. Luckily the ER did a very good job on removing the piece of metal. If it was 2mm over it would have been over my pupil and it would have scarred which I am sure would have affected my vision.
Im definately getting this faceshield at the local welding supply, its alot more form fitting and closer to the face than the ones we have at school
