Need feedback on an idea I had
Well my buddy is a really good machinist, recently unemployed but he's taking his time looking for a real good job while collecting unemployment. He likes to stay busy, and he has a small CNC mill in his garage, so today he hit me up and asked if I wanted him to make me anything.
I was thinking about what kinda machined stuff we could do that no one has done before. One of the most common problems people encounter when working on Hondas is where to hook the chains when pulling or installing a motor. None of the solutions I have seen are really ideal.
At the shop I worked at we had a device (I think it's called a 'ballast'?) that hangs under the hoist, and the chains hang from each end. You can turn a crank on the end to make it slide side to side, helping to balance or tilt the motor. Helps alot if using unequal height points for chain attachment. But most shops and home mechanics I have seen do not have this on their hoist - just chains hanging from the hook.
So here's what I came up with. Imagine two simple machined brackets that bolt to the motor quickly and have an easy way to attach the chains securely. They would need to bolt to two spots that are spaced to balance the load. I just want to make em for myself and my buddies right now, but maybe if people are interested I will sell a few sets on here - only if we can sell em for like $60 bucks or so. Not looking to get rich by ripping people off....
oh yeah, these would be for a Bseries to start since that is the most common swap my friends and I do....
So here are my questions:
1. Does anyone think this is a good idea or do you all think I'm an idiot?
2. Where would be the best spots for the brackets to bolt to?
The first spots I thought of were the bolt holes for the power steering pump, and the bottom two bolts for the distributor. That would be a pretty equal spacing (front right and back left sides of the head, if you're facing the bay...), and we could make the height equal easily enough during the design stage.
The only thing I wonder is if a bracket bolted tightly to the two 12mm threaded holes for the distributor bolts could hold the weight of the motor (or half of it) without snapping the bolts/damaging the bolt holes. I don't know **** about the strength of bolts, etc. (except what I read in 'Engineer to Win'...), and I figured this would be the right forum to ask....

its an equalizer/load leveler they're like $30 alot of engine hoists come with them.

Whenever I think I have a great new idea the first thing I do is search the patent office online database. I have yet to have a great idea that someone didn't already have before me.

Nissan sells something like that for their engines.
They are called engine slingers.

I did once. But I sat on it for too many years w/o doing anything and now somone else has a Patent pending on it ...
anyway, the US patent website is a great place to go to look into ideas you have

Re: (00Evan)
well when i get brackets for free with my free leveler that came with my 175$ hoist i dont think he could make anything from selling them for 1/3 the price of my whole setup. lol
i wouldnt even pay 5$ for them, because levelers come with brackets. and you can find levelers that come free with your hoist.
even if you have to buy a leveler, from northern theyre like 30$ on sale.

Re: (dfoxengr)
so you got brackets similar to what I'm talking about, and they came with your leveler?
I've never seen that. Take a pic of em for us? I wanna see how they work.
To everyone else:
Just to clarify, I'm not asking if this would be a good idea commercially - IE, can I patent it and sell it to make money? That's not the question, and if anyone had read my OP all the way through they would understand it.
I'm asking, if I made a set FOR MYSELF and maybe a few more to GIVE to my buddies, do you agree that it would make it easier to pull/drop in motors. and I also asked a question about the attachment points I had in mind, to see if you guys thought they were strong/stable spots.
It almost seems like everyone just read the first paragraph and saw an opportunity to try to make themselves look smart by making me look stupid? Especially mr patent office guy, and the load leveler crew. READ THE ******* POST and look at the questions I'm asking. Remember in the OP when I said this: "I just want to make em for myself and my buddies right now, but maybe if people are interested I will sell a few sets on here"
Everyone's acting like I'm trying to start a corporation or something, jesus.

Re: (revolt_allmotor)
check out the link I posted with the nissan engine slingers, that might give you an idea of what you have to make. And yes it makes pulling engines quite easy/safe.

yeah I looked at those. that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking of. except machined, since thats the easiest way for us to make stuff. thanks for contributing
