Default fabricator school ? Or own personal tig welder ? choices...

Here is the problem that I am having. A lot of people out there are looking for good fabricators in the business, and there is vacant positions open if you are a very good tig welder. Tig Welding is an art, and not a lot of people are good at art, nor does it come natural to them, but I believe with a lot of practice anything can be achieved.

I'm suppose to be getting an interview for Tig Welding on monday, making oem manifolds. I think for the company that I will be Tig Welding is just filling in the spot welds the robot didn't finish with Tig Welding, so I think it's a pretty good start for me.

I am usually entitled to hands own experience, and I'm thinking about getting my own Tig Welder and learning how to become a better tig welder myself.

I'm currently taking a Tig Welding school right now, and It's a very great benefit to me as I am getting better. I am on like my 5-6th day and I'm doing aluminum. Which is very hard to conquer. I don't want to say I have mastered mild steel and stainless steel yet as far as very thin metal is concerned, but I can do the pretty thick steel.

I was thinking about going into an associates in Fabrication at a school, but I don't know that many schools that offer such programs.

Now I'm open mind to what Honda-tech has to share this is why I came here to actually see the truth what's behind it, and see what the experienced have said.

How did you become a fabricator ? School ? Self taught ?

Did it take you long to become good ?

Should I get a own personal tig welder ? or search for a school that offers an associates in Fabrication ?

I know these are a lot of questions but I am very interested and entitled to your opinions!!

im a hobbyist and im guessing most guys were self taught and made the right connections on their own. if they are employed by a big company im betting they had to get their certifications for welding. thats just my guess though.

I learned how to stick weld as a kid with my Dad. Then as I got older my jobs afforded me access to MIG and TIG machines. I usually asked permission and used me own time to watch others and then give it a go myself. It took me years to get get to the point I'm at now. I'm comfortable with almost any machine, but I'm still no where near as good as some of the artists I see post work in here.

When I started in all this, It was all Stick welding mainly on Agricultural machinerie, then I went trough a few autobody job for me and my friends, then I thought MIG was the best thing on earth, since I did not know how to TIG.

I had seen people tigging, my uncle was doing Boat propeller repair in Al and SS, and one day I asked him to show me the basic, turn out I liked it very much, I worked for him about 2 year on the weekend and he show me A LOT... But I already known how to handle a puddle of fused metal, so progress was quick.

As of today, I can weld pretty damn much anything, I own a Syncrowave 200, and very rarely put the whip on hit, the TIG Torch is king in my shop. By no mean I want to say I master TIG welding, but I can do quality beads that are strong and look very good. I sold my MIG a few year ago.

All this is said here to say, you need to start somewhere, either school, hobby, yourself teached with books and video... nothing will beat practice, a lot of it... hundred's of hours or '' torch time '' is the key.

keep working on it, you are going to handle this pretty soon, sooner than you think...
Hope it help !

Thanks Crank. Here is a thread I made for my Tig Welding Journey.

I would appreciate it if some of you guys were interested to keep an
eye on my thread, and throw out inputs towards my previous skill and
what I could do to show improvement.
