hi, guys ok this is my problem i have a 220 outlet that im gonna use for my welder ,but it has 4 holes in it for a 4 prong plug I have a 220volt extension cord made out of 6/3 wire that i wanna use ,but it only has 3 prongs on it will i be ok being my receptacle has 4 holes and my plug only has 3?

go to home depot and they should be able to help you out. wild guess you trying to plug it in to your stove outlet right? there is a ground wire there to meet code. if your going to use an ext. cord check it often for too much heat. hope that this helped you.

Does your dryer plug have 4 prongs?

Neither the dryer or welding machine will usually have 4 prongs. It is possible to use a 4 prong plug/outlet, and just not use the 4th one.

yep the dryer has 4 prongs the cord will plug into the receptacle but on one side one of the prongs is smaller im sure u guys know what i mean and it dosent have 4 prongs so its just another ground?

just install a new outlet in your garage. i wouldn't use the dryer outlet. the breaker might be too small for your welder. it should only cost you like 30 bucks to install a new outlet and breaker if you do it yourself.

New electrical code requires 4 prong receptacles for 220 , 2 hots a neutral and a ground, most older style receptacles have a 3 prongs because they lack the neutral , seeing how the ground and neutral are bonded in the electrical panel, your cord should work if it lines up correctly in the receptacle

otherwise go to Home depot get a Male end for your cord (welder) and cut the old plug off and remake it just leave the neutral alone


check the max fuse size for your welder if its 50 amps , it may be to much for you to use the dryer plug , most dryers use a 10/3 wire which is good for 30 amps

you said it was a 6/3 wire which is rated for 50 amps ,

I checked the with the model you told me and the max fuse size is 30 amps so you would be ok with using your dryer outlet , just change the Cord Male plug to make it fit correctly in the dryer receptacle , have fun - James
