what transmission fluid: 97 d16 5 speed?
how's it going? just trying to finish up taking care of this car since god knows when the last time she was loved.
i've searched a bit, and it seems that people are either running:
-10w30 motor oil
-gm or penzoil synchromesh
-honda mtf
-torco mtf
- or the redline street version transmission fluids.
-some random weight gear oil with a little lucas
i can't get a clear cut answer. i'm pretty much in between the last four options, as i tried engine oil in my other car, and wasn't really pleased with the car, who knows if the engine oil was the cause of the issue, but i won't be running that test on this nameless honda.
i'm also not so interested in the synchromesh options, that stuff is thin as hell. also rocked it in my other car, and wasn't impressed
** is there any good fluid that i can use that i can pick up from oreiley's or pep boys? according to oreiley's computer system, i should get some 80/90 gear oil, which they don't carry, but i could probably find some.
let't not turn this into the other twenty threads i looked into..
who is running an actual gear oil with a weight that they picked up from a parts store. also include your experience
thanks y'all.

Re: what transmission fluid: 97 d16 5 speed?
Torco MTF is more like the Honda MTF of old and is better for older transmissions than Honda MTF. I know this applies for the 92-95. Believe it should be the same for the 96-00 being the difference there is steel shift forks instead of aluminum, but other than that, same design manual transmission.

10w30....never any of the Redline Street fluids.
Mid 96 till 2000, steel cage bearings were used for the ISB and outer CSB (with lock ring)...
except I ran across another early 96 EX tranny that plastic cage ISB was used, steel cage CSB. The ISB bearing cage came apart (brittle) and was a very light brown instead of the normal dark brown, IMHO a sign Redline MTL or MT-90 was used.

Re: what transmission fluid: 97 d16 5 speed?
This might be of some interest, the replacement bearings from Honda even on the 92-95 are steel caged now. So if any of the bearings have been swapped with OEM they will not be plastic caged on these older trannies.

Incorrect info. The bearings interchange and you can get either no matter which part number you order. I have ordered PL3 (88-95) and got steel cages and well as plastic cages, same goes for PSO (96-00) as I've gotten plastic cages instead of steel cages.

Interesting, I ordered from the dealer here in BC and they gave me a steel caged bearing for my CX/DX Canadian 5 speed ISB. I figured it was the consistent replacement after ISB failure history accumulated.
Good to know it's a crap shoot.
I also assumed this due to the replacement part number:
