Default extreme clutch chatter

I just started having this intermittent problem. I have a CRX with a B16, exedy organic, pressure plate is like 2-3 years old and the disc is like 1.5 years old. When I start from a stop the clutch will not slip smoothly instead it like grabs and releases very rapidly and the whole car shakes violently whenever I try to slip it from a start. If I rev higher and slip longer it dosen't do it. No other problems once moving, no slipping, engages and disengages fine when shifting, just this starting problem where I get very violent shaking. Any ideas? I know I am probably going to have the pull the trans but I'm hoping (not too hard) I won't have to, also maybe figuring out what to expect.

Probably have a contaminated disc- input shaft seal leak or bad rear main leak.

Could be a bad disc as well.

Might sound crazy, but check your motor mounts also. The 94-97 Accords start to chatter real bad on launch when the front (and sometimes rear) mount wear out. My 94 Accord started doing this a few months ago. I bought an OE front torque mount from Honda and problem solved.

Another posibility is that the facing on the disc has glazed over. I used to rebuild clutches for a living and we would see that sometimes. If that's the case just hit the facing lightly with a DA sander with light sandpaper. You don't want to remove matterial, just scuff up the surface come.

Last could be the disc hanging up on the input shaft. Did you (or whoever installed the disc) clean the input shaft and check how the disc slid on it before installing it? The disc should slide freely whithout hanging up. Also, if the input shaft was lubed with grease that can lead to a problem. The grease can attract particles and dust from the facings that gunk up on the shaft. This can lead to the disc dragging on the shaft as you release the clutch which can cause chatter. We always used a dry graphite spray that wouldn't hold particles. You can pick up something similar at auto parts and hardware stores that's made for locks cylinders and ignition switches.

I doubt is a bad rear main seal. Oil leaking and getting onto the clutch assembly would make it slip, not chatter.
