Default Engine Whine at Low Gears

Hi all, this is my second thread here and i hope again i could get some resolution to my problem.

Following to my latest thread, i bought a Honda Civic 2013 LX at 52000km.
Since i bought it, i have been hearing a small whine at a high rpm especially in low gears (1st and 2nd), just before the gear shift.
Its the same whine as if your going in reverse but at much lower pitch.

I already changed my tranny oil, Honda ATF as recommended by the dealership. The sound is the same before and after.

One thing I noticed is that after a long ride, 30 mins on highway the sound becomes a little higher pitched, but the next day back to normal.
I could not really determine weather the sound is comming from the tranny or engine but its there.

I rode one of my friends cars 2014 civic and the sound is there but again much lower, yet his car had only 5000 km on it.
Also took to the dealers and managed to simulate the sound again but the quality control guys said it normal but again the dealers cannot be trusted as the tranny is still under warrenty.

Should i be worried, or is it normal ?

Default Re: Engine Whine at Low Gears

Even helical gears will produce noise when loaded or coasted. The extent of the noise has a lot to do with the condition of the parts. If you romp on 1st gear, expect noise over the life of the gear. 1st and 2nd gears normally have a shallow pitch which makes noise prominent at lower speeds and high load. The fluid type will have a small amount to do with this, a fluid change is not a correction at your stage.

Transmissions do make noise, the real debate is will the unit fail having gear noise as the symptom. In most cars I service with a similar complaint, the car has been beaten. This abuse will widen the pattern between input and secondary shafts that can produce noise.

Thicker oils can reduce noise because of the effect viscosity has on suppressing noise. When the oil heats up the condition may return. The level of noise must be determined using a control (another car) to determine if there is a fault worth pursuing.

A lot of 1 ton pickups will produce rear end noise not out of defect, but out of gear strength. Sometimes noise is considered an acceptable change-off to longevity and power handling. Some people cannot handle it, and that is to some extent, the price you pay for power.
