So I am starting to look at building up my spare transmission to handle the power a little bit better. The previous owner of my car beat on the transmission quite a bit and was in bad shape when i got it. and now that i built up a new motor and swapped it in with a turbo the trans is really starting to show its age. My friend has another EX trans the will give me so that i can start building this up. here are my plans:

1.) New bearings-Which ones should i be replacing? diff bearings, and counter shaft, main shaft bearings, what else?

2.) New seals- input and axel seals, that's it right?

3.) Carbon coated syncro's- Is this needed? I am going to put ne syncros in anyways, i figured these would help make shifting easier.

4.) LSD - Originally I was looking at an obx, but apparently they have gone way down hill recently. the next option i was looking at was the MFactory unit. Im not sure what to do here, I dont really want to spend 650 dollars for an LSD when the 350 dollar one would do the job for my power levels.

My current car is a eagle/vitara build, 450cc injectors, 15 psi, somewhere around 275-300 hp. after rebuilding the trans and a few more upgrades I want to increase the pressure and hope to hit 400. This is a street car with full interior etc, and is a DD, but I do like to drag race so it will see some abuse off the road.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me. I have been thinking about getting in contact with gearspeed inc to purchase all the bearings, seals, and syncros since that is the only place i know who has it all. is this a good idea or are there other places i should check out, and how does gear speed inc compare to others?

I offer complete rebuild kits, fwiw.

Countershaft bearings don't wear out TOO often, but I have seen it. Usually standard bearings are the ISB and end case. If you're installing a new diff, then you must use new bearings, I don't care what anyone else says. Reusing diff bearings is hack.

Axles seals check, input shaft seal check, and shift rod seal should be replaced.

OBX can handle the power fine, it's just the longevity of the materials, craftsmanship, and customer service that leads people elsewhere.

Pull apart the trans, inspect everything- be good to do the complete sleeve set- sleeve, hub, and synchro rings/springs.

It will cost some $$ to do it right, but nothing feels better than a nice transmission

Depends on what is needed in the tranny upon tear down.

Scuffing the gear cones helps, I rarely replace the synchros and then use leftover GOOD OEM's. I've yet to even see a carbon synchro in person.

I have several trannys I built running low 11's, sponsering my first tranny since he has a legit chance to run 10's. I built his tranny the first time with OBX before their QC went to hell.

One a D Series LSD install I replace the diff bearings and the input shaft bearing along with four seals. Then inspect everything else. IF the countershaft bearings are bad, there is alot more damage elsewhere, sometimes not even worth rebuilding the tranny.

Synchros won't do any good if the hub/slider or gear is worn.

OBX will handle the power, but will likely destroy other parts as their run out is beyond bad.

ANY OBX I'm given to install from now will be checked on a lathe before even opening the tranny it is destine for.

We've been screwed on this, I think OBX just put the ramaining stock on Ebay as Mirage LSD's.

that's not a bad idea, check the run out etc on a lathe, if i decided to do that i will definitely throw it up on the lathe.

Better yet don't buy one. If it is out of spec or if the ring gear bolts hit the housing, you'll have to fight for a refund, and if given one they'll hit you with a 30% restocking fee. Look into the MFactory or Quaife.

do it right the first time. you go and buy an obx for 300 and then it breaks or doesnt work its still gonna cost more and cause more headaches then just getting right from the start. i went and bought a wavetrac. lifetime warrenty

Hopefully they stay in business. Now that they stopped carrying Quaife, their warranty ends when they run out of parts to fix them as the new US Distributor of Quaife isn't honoring Autotechs warranty.
