Default B16 tranny shifting problems, I need a clue

Used B16 tranny out of a 99-00 civic si 3rd 4th, 5th, and reverse are not going all the way into gear or the synchros are just ****ed

Let's see it's 3 am I am racking my brains on whether to pull this damned tranny and just inspect the internals, because I bought this damned thing from a friend of mine, did a manual swap on my teg, and now come to find out first and second go into gear just fine, and now 5th is going into gear, but reverse sometimes goes into gear all the way and works. But thus far third and fifth are damned near non-existant, I put it into gear and I let out the clutch, nope gear grind, and don't even think about holding it in gear. further more if you keep the wheels on the ground (doing this in a shop mind you) and you try to put it in gear it shouldn't be able to beacause the synchros are trying to slow the engine down to match the transmission rotation speed, of course so you can't get into gear until you push the clutch in. Well third and fourth I can push it into gear with no problem, so am I screwed, I don't want to deal with the douche that sold me the tranny I figured a rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and at least third and fourth gear is my best bet.

What are your suggestions?????

And just for your piece of mind, I'm a very apt mechanic been doing this for 8 years I just want honest opinions from the forum experts who have been in this situation, I have no problem with tearing the tranny apart but if I'm wasting my time and should get another tranny then yeah, I'll shut up and wait for the responses.

Thanks

All of this with no really nasty noises when you drive it?

Sounds to me that you have some synchro hub/sleeve damage on a couple of the gears. And not sure what to really tell you for 3rd and 4th yet.

I'm confused when you say 3rd and 5th (I presume you mean 4th) are non-existant. You clutch in, put it in gear, clutch out and grinds. Then you say that you can put it into these gears without clutch, but don't say if it's grinding or not when doing so, you say it goes right in. These two things conflict with one another. So not sure how to answer you. lol

Given the issues though, your best bet might be to just find another B16 or GSR trans for $400-$600 and put it in. A quick estimate on what I think is wrong with yours will lead to far more than that to do the job right... but you may have some things to fix with another used trans though.

yeah sorry my bad, I can slip it into third and fourth without the clutch, but I am met with a really nasty grind

I think I'm going to disassemble it tomorrow night I really want to know what the issue is, even if I decide to get another tranny

Only thing i've ever seen kinda like that was a K-series tranny that just wouldn't go all the way into 2nd, and the odd time it would go in it would pop out. When we pulled it apart all the dog teeth were sheared off second gear (happpened during a burnout, guy went for second and it just ground, that was it for 2nd gear) I've never heard tell of anyone having similar issues with B-series trannys though.

i work at a transmission shop and your best bet is to just find another trans. it could start getting real $$$$$$ when it comes to honda transmissions. but keep your old one always nice having extra parts

Alright well I took it apart and got some good pics of the damage, I don't know who owned this car but they loved the hell out of beating the daylights out of third and fourth, I mean it's so bad that the detents are missing, and the spring was chewed up in three pieces most of it on the magnet, lol the gears themselves seem in good shape its the damned synchros and the synchro engagment teeth that are sheared. Anyways onto the carnage.

hmm seems innocent enough

a little metal shavings on the bearing

normally i'd expect a few strands of metallic dust to be on the magnet, but not damned detent springs

part of the two pieces that I didn't throw away

lol, the sad thing is if it wasn't for the detents on the shifter, this collar would just flop about like a damned prostitute

another one for the road

Well this concludes my epic journey now I am reassembling it and pushing the car outside until I can get another tranny from the douche that sold it to me
