5 speed shudders in 1st gear
I have a stock 98 4 cylinder manual accord with 127K miles. Occasionally I run into a pretty wicked shudder when starting out in 1st gear. It only happens as I am letting out the clutch from a stop or a slow roll. About 50% of the time it doesnt happen at all, 20% of the time its minor, 25% its moderate, and 5% of the time its a major shudder. The tach stays stable throughout the shudder. I dont feel the shudder through the clutch pedal. It seems to be associated with 1st gear only, Ive only noticed it in 2nd a couple of times (almost unnoticeable shudder), and never in 3rd-5th. Ive started from a stop in 3rd before, and didnt have any problem with the clutch slipping or shuddering. It also seems to happen in waves, where it wont happen at all for a few days, and then will shudder every time for a few days. Ive owned the car for about a year, the previous owner replaced the clutch at about 100k, the receipt is for 1 set clutch and 1 resurface. Any thoughts at what might cause this?

when the clutch slips you can't hear it. i remeber my 91 accord made the same sound when i started in 2nd or 1st on a slight slop and didn't give enough gas. i think it's a loose or worn pilot bearing.
it stops once the clutch is fully engaged right?

Yes, it stops when the clutch is fully engaged. It only lasts for about 2 seconds. There is no sound associated with it, just the jerking/shuddering of the car. Its like the clutch is slipping, grabbing, slipping, grabbing, ect. It doesnt seem to matter how hard Im being on it, I can pull away like grandma and itll do it, later I can race off the line and it wont. Just not sure if its the clutch, gear box, differential, ect. My cousin has an F-150 with a diff that "slips" occasionally, and this feels similar.

Ok, thanks, still got the issue sometimes, seems like clutch adjustment because it works most of the time. If one is not paying attention, you will let out the clutch too soon, and it will happen, might need an adjustment.
