I was taught to use 1 dry hand or 2 oily hands. It works very well. I cuss the ****** bastards that use a wrench when I have to get them back off.

HAND!
the tool is for loosening them
if you use it to tighten one you may not be able to get it off.

hand tighten, but don't over tight it, put the new oil in, and start the car and watch if it moves, the pressure tighthens the filter.

Amen, after about 4 hours I learned that lesson a few months back.... a friend learned it too.... you have no idea what that filter looked like when we FINALLY got it off the car, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell it was an oil filter lol

I hand tighten. Using a wrench increases the tendency to overtighten.
A plumbers wrench works well for this.
