would this scratch on my cylinder walls cause my car to smoke?
Just started my rebuilt motor which started burning oil very badly to the point where the spark plugs would foul. Wondering if anyone knows if these vertical scratches on my cylinder walls would cause the smoking. thx.

Were the cylinders honed? What is/was the piston to wall clearance? If those marks weren't there before... bad news.. even if they were.. bad news. Looks like your pistons got a little too hot and expanded too much.

The cylinders were honed. not sure on piston clearance. those marks weren't there before. the engine has been running for like 5 mins before it stopped because the plugs had oil on them. all four cylinders have these scratches. would those vertical lines cause oil to burn?

Yes. Let this be a lesson. Those look to be forged non factory pistons. Piston to wall clearance is very critical on engines running these types of modifications.

Piston to wall clearance looks pretty big still. Can you catch your fingernail on any of the scratches? Did you install new rings? Gapped correctly? Honed correctly?
