Icon2 top dead center sensor bad? need help

ok heres my problem i have four codes, code 8 top dead center sensor, code 41 o2 sensor, code 17 speed sensor, and code 12 egr? i think.

I have a 98 ex coupe with a f22b1 engine w/ a P0A obd1 ecu hack job if you ask me... bought the car for the shell and the price was right. kid had a h22 then blew it so he did the f22 to get it running again.

my main issue is the top dead center sensor cause of the big power loss. I was told to swich out the distributor i couldnt find one so i decided to try a b16 it fix and runs the car fine but same problem . befor i did that i double checked the wiring it was fine. ohh the distributor connector is a obd2 one plug and the distributor that came with the car was re wired for the obd2 connector.

any thoughts would be great thanks guys,
Derek

What OBD is the engine? 94-95 OBD1 96-97 OBD2

The TDC sensor on the OBD2 F22B1 is located behind the crank pulley not the distributor. It's mounted to the oil pump housing with the CKP sensor. So if your engine harness is wired as OBD2, you should check the wires to the sensor down on the oil pump housing. make sure they are connected and not shorting out. Or that they are even connected at all.

TDC sensor is the one on the left and the CKP sensor is on the right.

I thought of that but there are no wires coming out of the timming belt cover. I do know some years they put the sensor in the distributor. Im not sure what type of distributor was on the car, but if it was running from the distributor wouldnt the b16 one work just fine? how can i tell what type of distributor was on the car?
Thanks

ok its not the distributor. I swaped it out. The engine harness was wired to obd1 i matched the distributor to either a 94 or 95 accord ex with an internal coil. With the top dead center sensor in the distributor. It was not wired to the crank sensors! any thoughts?

What wires do you have going to the distributor as it sits now?

Should be as follows;

BLK/YEL -> Ignition Switch
YEL/GRN -> ECM

ORN -> ECU Pin B11 (CYP P)
WHT -> ECU Pin B12 (CYP M)

ORN/BLU -> ECU Pin B13 (TDC P)
WHT/BLU -> ECU Pin B14 (TDC M)
These are the ones you want to focus on for DTC 8

BLU/GRN -> ECU Pin B15 (CKP P)
BLU/YEL -> ECU Pin B16 (CKP M)

Your wire colours may not match from the distributor connector to the ECU. But make sure the wire colours at the distributor match up with the corresponding ECU pin.

Hope this helps some

Do a compression test on the engine. See if maybe your lack of power is due to lack of cylinder compression. Do you see any grey/white smoke when you start up the car?

ok I did the compression test cyl 1,2,3 was around 140 and 4 was around 130 135. I think the next step would be to check the timing even tho the engining has only around 50k. damn cars

There almost has to be a broken wire coming from the TDC sensor. AFAIK that code is only displayed when there's no signal from the TDC sensor. Try checking for continuity between the TDC sensor wire at the distributor and the TDC sensor wire at the ECU.

You said OBD2 - 1 hackjob? You obviously have a wiring issue( different ECUs and dizzys but same problem. The wiring for this car should be very easy meaning no hackjob necessary. All pnp. So, if there is something there that could be referred to as hackjob I would suspect that area first. ALso you shouldn't worry about all codes at once, just pick one and focus on that. Often times with hackjobs the source of one problem is also that of others. What harness/ ecu / dizzy/ jumpers are being used?

ok Guys figuered it out. I did a ohm test at the distributor it was good and a did a ohm test from the ecu end and was good again.... But i did not test through the obd2 to obd1 harness. Turned out one of the tabs for the tdc sensor was bent bent it back to shape and waaalaaaa fixed ha Thanks guys
