Teflon LockNut vs Castle Nut and Cotter pin. LBJ
I just bought some new Moog lower balljoints for my ef hatchy, and the nut provided is a nylon locking style nut. No more castle nut and cotter pin??
Do I trust this shlllt?
I called Rockauto up on it as the picture shows a cotter pin but they say that is the latest revision and is perfectly safe.
New technology scares me. Probably have to use an impact to squeeze it to the knuckle aswell, my experience says it will spin the joint before sucking together with a ratchet

all you gotta do is put a jack gently under the lbj bolt and it will stay put the proceed to tighten the nut...but ya i would stick with the castle nut/cotter pin combo
any chances you can post a pic ? I'm curious what that thing does look like

Sounds like theyre using these now. Honestly I dont like the idea of them. With a cotter pin, as long as the pin is there, there is a zero percent chance of losing the nut and crashing. Even if the nut comes loose, it cant back off enough for the balljoint to come out of the control arm and killing you

the Teflon (typically nylon) locknut is designed to not come loose on its own. I would not be concerned about any safety issues. However, the draw backs compared to the castle nut and cotter pin for the application are no small thing.
one-time-use only. reusing a nylon lock nut is a big no-no. one use then trash. this can be annoying if you have to do something like replace a worn CV axle... you'd need to replace the nut too.
Hand tools only. most encounters i've had with nylon lock nuts involved some warning against using impacts or power drivers to install them. I guess the chance of completely destroying the nylon is pretty high.
Extra drag at install and removal. it's hard enough sometimes to get the castle nut off without the joint spinning in it's socket... headache.
Consistency. the other nuts that connect things to the knuckle are castle nut and cotter pin. it's better when things match if possible. Also consistent with every other vehicle of its type on the road...

Honestly, I'm not going to say it's a bad idea, but like stated the teflon lock nuts are one time use.
Furthermore, the castle nut and cotter pin system is such and effective system, the military still to this day incorporates it in just about every application.

I would stick with the castle nut and cotter pin, as mentioned the worlds military providers still use them, there is a saying, "don't fix it if it ain't broke".
Although useful, Nylocks are a one time use nut, once removed they must be replaced.
Torqueing a Nylock is an issue as the Nylocks drag must be taken into account, although not a huge problem with ball joints. 94
