Well I'm just driving down to San Diego for the weekend when all of a sudden I hear a metallic *bump*...*cling**clang*cling*..... from under my car (sounded like it started in the front of the car, bounced off of the ground, and was hitting the underside of my car) as I'm travelling 70 mph on a freeway.

Alarmed, I pull over and shut the car off immediately. No CEL, and no apparant problems either. I start the car back up and watch the dash, and listen for any funny noises. Again, no CELs, but there's a new faint rattle at idle (~750 rpm). I pop my hood and listen again for the noise, and sure as hell, it's still there. When sitting in the driver's seat, you can feel slight--but noticable--vibrations, which weren't there before. The noise sounds like it's coming from my cylinder head cover, but I really can't tell.

Another thing which is odd is that I used to get an annoying rattle at ~3000 rpm, which I assumed was due to a heat sheild/rocks/debris issue with my exhaust/cat-converter. Well, it's gone now. Perhaps the rattling is due to that... I'm getting under the car tomorrow to check it out.

Also, within the last week (actually last Friday, I left for my trip on Sat.), I've been getting a squealing noise from the engine bay. I'm assuming this is due to improperly tensioned belts.

What do you guys think?

The car is '96 integra ls (b18b1) /w 143000 mi on the odo. Everything else has been great with the car so far. I haven't had the valves adjusted or any other major service to the engine or transmission since I had the car (got it at 100k mi). I didn't bother to check timing/plugs/wires/distributor. Plugs were changed about a year ago, oil changed every 3000 mi, etc...

does it go away when you press the clutch in? tranny mainshaft bearings?

Ok, now I've got other issues.

The car wouldn't start this morning. Turned and held the key for a few seconds at III position, and the engine struggled to crank over. I tried again, this time holding the key at III. After a few seconds, the car starts cranking very sporadically and starts.

I let the car run for a few minutes and open the hood again. The same buzzing/rattling noise is back, but I've narrowed it down to a specific place. The noise is definitely coming from the cylinder head cover, right where a small hose connects there from the intake manifold. I don't know what this hose is for (vacuum connection?). But what would make that noise?

But why would the car have such a hard time starting, AND all of this other stuff happen too? I'm just wondering what fell off of my car last week. I'll take some photos if you guys don't see what i mean. Please advise.

No.. the noise is still there.

the hose from ur valve cover is 4 pvc
venting gas back to ur intake runner


as 4 the noise is it a ticking tapping or knocking
is it at about 3k rpm only or 3k and on

OK, but the noise is pretty damn loud--even at idle. I can hear it from the driver's seat. I've not heard this before. Thanks for the reply. Here's some other pics.
