im in the process of doing the piston ring end gaps for my turbo setup build and the block is bored and honed fresh. the issue is that several times when i tried to removal the rings the kinda sharp edges created lines in the new hone. almost like a slight scratch. The cylinders appear to be smooth but what should i do? Do a slight rehone myself or just put the pistons in like that?

How far are you from the shop that did the work?

Ask them, or take the block back and have them give you their expert opinion.

That's the best way to do it.

Or if they're not close, take it to a trusted machine shop and ask them. If you don't know if any, go talk to some local autobody shops that do some resoration work. Ask them who they send there customers to. Ask automotive repair shops who they send engine out to.

There are way's to build relationships. Let the shops know you have been asking around and tell the machine shop you did some checking and they were the recommended shop.

what would happen if i ran a honer through it one time?

It should clean it up. Have you used the honer before?

yes sir i have. None of the scratches catch my nail. its almost like i slightly scratched away the new hone. If i run the honer through a bit, would it change my ring gap (.001)?

my piston ring end gap for the top ring is .021, is that too loose for turbo applications?

I really dont see how you scrated your cylinder wall so bad gapping the piston rings? Put the rings in, squar them with your piston, check gap, and take them out.

and yes we just talked about your ring gap about two thread down. You are right in the middle of the specs on ring gap.

I'll use quotes around scratch because it sounds like you only rubbed off a line of honing rather than actually scratched the cylinder. If you cant feel it with your nail then once the motor is fully broken in, the "scratch" will probably be gone. The pistons will wear away the unmarred hone until it is even even with the "scratch." Widening the cylinder further would decrease compression and life considerably more than the "scratch" would. Using the same pistons, you'd end up with a wider ring gap and greater piston to wall clearance.
