OT: Help with MR2( car wont idle)
(posting for a friend) i purchased the car used, and it ran fine. i took it back, started it, and it would die when i let off the gas...checked...there was a fuel leak...i replaced the bad hose, spark plugs and changed the oil...but when i start it, same thing. it sounds a bit smoother now, but still, the minute i let off the gas, the rpms drop down and the car dies...
some things to note: when i took the old spark plugs out, they were gapped at 1.6mm (huge gap) but they were all burnt and one even looked melted (the ground part), on the electrodes, cyl. 2 and 4 had the thing surrounding the electrode worn out...on cyl 1 and 3, it was ok. the stock wires look pretty bad shape (im guessing cuz he gapped it soo big) (aftermarket ignition = msd and magnecor wires)...but bad ignition wouldnt cause it to keep dieing would it?
when i hold it at 2K rpms, it seems ok, but the minute i let go, it dies...could it be timing?
also, i looked at one of the adjustable cam gears, and one of the bolts was loose, and the cam gear was at the very very right that the bolts could go...could it be possible that the adjustable cam gear slipped and made the exhaust cam timing off? would that cause it to do that? any help appreciated

Hmm, sounds strange but to me seems hard to pin point. My first though was the throttle body, but not sure. Could be the fast idle valve, stickey throttle, not too sure. I would tell him to look there next. Since the previous spark plugs were shot, I would tell your friend to do a compression test. Also, the coil could be to blame, have him test it. If there is anymore to decribe that would help, how did it drive?

well we didnt want to drive it yet because we werent really able to pinpoint the problem. Also the car isnt insured or registered. But i think youre right about the throttle body. The accel pedal is stiff as hell, any ideas on that? I was messing around with the throttle cable when he tried starting it again. While it tried to idle, i gave it a quick tug, then he turned the car off. A while later we tried it and it started to idle. Very lumpy of course. There seems to be no vacuum leaks either. Ill let him know about the compression test. Thanks for the response.

Could be that the throttle has tons of carbon build-up. Try Chemtool carbon cleaner, spray into throttle, as directed. Also maybe try ATF in crankcase. If this doesn't help then I could say it is parts of the t/b.
