Which oil filter wrench do I use for the small honda oil filters?
I have a 03 civic si. Can you recommend a good oil filter wrench for the small honda oil filters? Is there an oil filter wrench that you place on top of the oil filter and use a socket and ratchet to turn the hex on top of the oil filter wrench? There's not much room for the metal band oil filter wrenches. Please post urls. Thanks.

These seem to work pretty good for me. The more you crank it, the tighter it squeezes the filter. Run a Google search for oil filter claw wrenches.

but beware some of these do no work well... just small filter pliers should work fine... and hand tighten the filters.
at work the one above doesnt seem to be as usefull as the pliers. just my .02

I guess no one here ever thought of hand tighten them then back off 1/4 turn?
There's no need to crank them down until you split the O-rings.

actually, you are supposed to go down until the o-ring hits the block- when it stops spinning easily, and then 7/8th's of a turn.
There have been several problems, ESPECIALLY with new CR-V's, where oil leaks and the car catches fire

I hear it was because some of the mechanics were double gasketing them.

thats the main reason. Another is from installing the filter with a dry gasket and a dry block, and the gasket tears, etc etc
I'm just saying you don't want your filter to be too loose

Hmmm I didn't hear about that one, yeah I agree with you on the filter not being too loose. Maybe with these newer hondas yeah maybe they should be tighter but for my ol' trusty EJ1: hand tighten then 1/4 turn back has always worked for me.

I see absolutely no reason for an oil filter wrench. I just use either a piece of fine emery cloth or a small sheet of 220 grit sandpaper. Works perfect everytime.

there is EXACTLY THAT....
i work for honda, and YES, you can go in to the parts dept. and buy a filter wrench that fits on the top of the filter, where you can plug a ratchet into and tighted/loosen.

Mac and Matco offer this adjustable filter wrench I use.
Matco part number OF636 and it's $10.95 you can order online too if you don't have access to a truck. I had one of the snap-on 3 claw ones and it broke after a week.

i just use those really thick rubber bands you get with your sunday paper, Wrap it around your existing oil filter and twist with my manly G.I. Joe Kung Foo grip. Never fails...

I'm not sure if it's the EXACT same piece, but mine looks exactly like this and was $4.00 at Advance/Discount Auto Parts. The new small oil filters are just about at the low limit of how small of a filter this will remove, but it's been working for me (on large and small filters) for going on 5 years now.

The channel lock brand universal oil filter wrench is very quick and can be used on almost anything big/small with a scew-on oil filter. It really helps to have the socket style for toyotas but thats a different size if I remember correctly.

to tighten, just use your hands. You can get them on pretty tight but you don't ruin the gasket. As for removing them, most of the time I can loosen them by hand, but when they are really stuck on there, I just stab it with a screw driver and turn it that way. Works every time
