Need help with automatic transmission......slams into gear, hear clunk noise.
This is a automatic transmission.
It shifts through first and second fine. But in and out of 3rd gear is like a slam into the gear. It really does feel like it slams into that gear. You can hear a clunk noise when you gain speed to get into 3rd, and another clunk when you slow down to a halt and it goes to a lower gear. It might be 4th gear, btw, as I wasn't able to count all the gear drops perfectly.
What's the problem?
Could it be that I burned something on the transmission? I did a fluid change a while back and it ran in limp mode for a while because the cord for the autotransmission was unpluged. By limp mode I mean the car stays in 3rd and doesn't shift out of it from dead stop to highway speed.

When you changed your fluid, did it smell burnt? If it was slightly brown and smelled burnt, then you have burnt a clutch pack. However, the "Clunk" you hear sounds like a loose band.
Either way it definately sounds like it is time for a tranny rebuild.
Contrary to what many would like to say, changing burnt fluid will not increase the life of your tranny. There was a reason it got burnt in the 1st place, and those reasons are always bad.

Woah, burnt clutch patch, that doesn't sound good. What's a loose band? and how sure are you?
