Default How to make car more fuel efficient? How to increase mpg?

Ok I am ready to start another project. I have my performance cars and now in response to current gas prices I want to put together something that will get good gas mileage. I am kinda partial to hondas or I would get a geo metro or something( plus I want something that looks good.) I was thinkng of a 89-91 civic sedan w/ maybe a 1.5 l d engine. but what can be done to the engine to make it more fuel efficient?

You're kidding? Stock D series engines are about as fuel efficient as it gets. For good fuel economy, keep your engine well maintained, keep up on the regular tune ups.

dont forget to change your o2 sensor regularly. i noticed 20-30 mile a tank difference when i changed mine. freeflowing ehaust and intake help as well and will give a couple more hp which you will need with the fuel efficient d series.

Shift real early, like 2000rpm. Control your testosterone - let that GeoMetro beat you at the stoplight. Drive slower. All the stuff you hate to do...

Best thing is, you don't have to make engine modifications to go back to your normal 25mpg habits!

Ok let me ask another question. what is the most fuel efficient car that honda made pre-1994. I ask because I have access to a lot of cars via my title loan connection. MOst cars older than 10 years old I can get extremely cheap( unless its a classic)

So which civic model had the best mpg?
This has nothing to do with horsepower. check my sig and you'll see my current lineup. But I commute to work and gas prices are making me look for a new job.

92-95 VX for sure. 92-95 CX is right below that. And if you wanna go pre-EG, the 88-91 CRX HF is a gas saver vehicle and most of the STD EF civics are gas savers in general...long geared, 1.5L engines.

I saw someone mention free flowing exhaust but dont forget a good filter. K&N drop in will give you a couple more MPG.

Also any weight you could save would help. Gut the interior!

Remove power steering belt if equipped.

Remove AC belt.

Anything that reduces the parasitic drag on the motor will help.

With a 92 VX your should be able to get in the 40-50 MPG range.

take out the cat, or at least gut it. or throw on a whole new free flowing exhaust.

K&N filter or even better a CAI should help a lot. make sure to get that oil from the valvecover out of your intake!

oh and also lean out the engine... lol. just don't melt any pistons!

Gutting the cat will hurt your performance and gas mileage, because you now have an open chamber for air turbulence.

I'd get a CRX HF, and swap in a Civic HX or OBD2 JDM D15B 3 stage VTEC as someone suggested. If that wasn't enough, I'd make my own turbo, boost it real low like 6psi, and run it with an AEM UEGO and EMS.
