Icon4 How did I screw up, timing belt?

Hey all.
The front main seal went on my '98 CR-V, so along with that, I did the oil pump, crankshaft position sensor, water pump, and timing belt.
I have done a few timing belts before, they aren't new to me, but this is the first DOHC timing belt I have done.
In the very beginning of this project, the timing belt drive gear was pretty much fused to the crankshaft, and we broke a few teeth off of the CPS tone ring, so we got a new gear and CPS. Got all of that back together, and from what I could tell, the crank was at TDC (the timing mark was aligned with the one on the oil pump).
Got it all back together, primed the oil pump with the spark and injectors disconnected, connected those up and fired the car up.
It was idling around 200rpm from what I could tell, sounded absolutely terrible and smelled like it was running really rich. Shut it off, and tried it a few more times to no avail.
Today, I pulled it all back apart, retimed it with the pulleys held at TDC with a nail through the retaining holes as I suspected I had a pulley a tooth off.
Fired it up again, same deal.
Can anyone provide any insight?

Do you have the stock cam gears? Were they positioned for TDC? Crank TDC is lined with the oil pump, cam gears lined with markings in the plastic trim behind the cam gears.
You can also check to make sure your distributor is in the correct position, which would be cylinder 1.

If you only serviced the timing belt, and this is the end result, then something went wrong. It would sound like to me that you used the wrong marks for the timing procedure. The crank pulley has a line indention that must align to the oil pump arrow on the housing. I have seen a few aftermarket pump housings that do not have markings on them, if yours does not show up as described in the service manual, replace the pump with one that has the correct markings.

The cam gears align the to rear cover assembly. There will be splits on the cover, and on the gears, with an UP indicator stamped on the cam gears. When you are finished installing the belt, be sure to rotate the engine counterclockwise at least twice (to bring all the marks back into position) to verify that you did not miss a tooth.

Adjusting distributor timing is suggested AFTER the procedure is completed to compensate for timing variations due to belt length. As long as you follow the advice I have posted, and have correctly reinstalled all components, you should have no problem. The CKF sensor does not trigger the ignition event, it is only there to monitor for engine misfires.

Replacing the oil pump is not a common repair, nor is replacing the crankshaft timing pulley. The fact that this part did not come off easily hints at something else being wrong with the car. Is the keyway on the crankshaft damaged or missing its key?

Since you seem to have done this a few times, how far off was the timing? You may have been off far enough to damage the valvetrain. This needs to be considered as well.

Have you in any way, modified the powertrain?
