I'm gonna say theres internal damage, if a chain skips, thats what happens.

chain stretched and jumped a tooth, if there was internal damage the dealer should have brought it up at the time they advised you of the timing chain. if it was able to run it couldnt have been that many teeth off.

or option b/ trade that ish in a new ride

They wouldn't know if there was internal damage until they had it torn down. They should have advised you that there could be other damage.

Does it actually sound like there is something mechanically loose or is it just running poorly? A bad cam sensor could make it run terrible.

well it sounds like the chain or tensioner is loose...and sounded like it was running poorly...but it didnt sound like theres stuff broken inside or anything...and its def not seized...cuz it still cranks over....

Apparently though, variable cam also makes it that the valves didn't touch the pistons when on low cam profile, and the engine just wouldn't rev past low cam profile.

is thats true?!?

It just seems unlikely that the chain jumped because they usually only jump if a guide is broken. If there is a broken guide the chain slaps around and you can definitely hear it. Also they should be able to check cam timing without too much tear down and tell you whether the timing is off. I don't know if it will hit the pistons on low cam if the chain jumps because I don't know the clearances. It is unlikely that they would hit with the timing 1 tooth off and it would not likely start at all if it was more than 1 tooth off. Hoewever I am not there looking at the car so I don't know exactly what they see/hear.
