Default fast idle control valve issues

ok, got an issue.. i really dont know much about the fast idle control valve..
my buddy has a 91 crx SI with a b20vtec setup... its got a b16a head on it.. with a chipped pr3 ecu.. (my setup on the fuel/ign tables) when we first got the b16 head swapped on, and everything wired up, it idled perfectly!

later about a month after it was completed, it started progressively getting higher idle.. till it was at like 2500 to 3500..
at first i thought it was the iacv.. so we messed around with swapping that out.. i ended up cleaning it really well and put some hondabond on the O ring to make sure it sealed.
i checked every vaccuum line and ended up isolating the problem to the fast idle control valve.. i pulled it off and plugged the holes with my fingers.. and wadda ya know... the idle dropped down to 500 rpm.. i turned the idle adjust screw on the throttle body and got it to idle at 750 no problems..
we tried a couple other FICVs from a few other IM's i got sitting in my stash.. still same issue.. so i ended up making a gasket and bolting the ficv over the top of it.. effectively plugging the holes and now the car idles perfect..

what i'm wondering is how this is going to affect things long term and how to resolve the issue to it can run normally (unplugged)
anyone deal with this? how'd you resolve it?
thanks
Rick

OBD1 cars have routines in the ECU to raise the cold idle "electronically" if you will. OBD0 is going to be more reliant on it, as the ECU is a little less sophisticated. You may have dunh dunh duh cold idle problems.

That being said, I have JB-welded the FITV fitting closed on my TB, but it's not running yet. I taped up everything that needed it, and let the JB-weld sink in over night. Hint: the air passages go into the throttle body, and you need to tape those off or JB-weld will get in the TB passage.

Thanks GimpyAccord for the idea, and help

Yes, plugging up the holes solves the idle problem BUT, does this do any damage or will it hurt anything in the long run??? The FIV is there for a reason. I am wondering because I have an Idle isue with up and down and when I plug the hole in the throttle body cover, the one that leads to the tube that goes to the FIV, the engine idles smooth. So can I leave this hole plugged or will it damage the engine.

Thanks,

Jeff

i dont think it'll damage the motor i think it mainly is for when the engine is cold that it allows the motor to idle higher.

yeah, it wont do anything bad, it will just take the engine longer to heat up; have had mine off for a while now
