Default Bad springs or bad shocks?

What are the symptoms of each and how do I tell the difference?

well.....the springs control ride hieght and ride frequency (the measure of how many times your suspension will bounce up and down, measured in cycles per minute. Stiffer springs = higher frequency = harsher ride) and the shocks act as a damping force to keep the springs from constantly compressing and decompressing .....so, with that said, what is your problem that you're having?.....if your ride is really bouncy going down the road, its probably your shocks.

I bottom out from time to time, last time I had the car jack stands I can pull up the wheel on one side much easier than the other side.
