B16A2 into Auto EK (TCM/TCU - Umm what?!?)
Hey Guys,
Alright I am super confused. I have gathered a lot of information from different people and sources, but they all contradict each other. I need someone to come out with the truth, lol, and actually help answer my questions with proof or something to back them up. Here's my dilemma:
I am going to be swapping in a B16A2 Motor from a 2000 Civic Si (OBD2b) into my Automatic 1997 Civic Hatch CX (OBD2a). The Transmission I will be using will be an OBD2 JDM Automatic B16 Transmission, OBD2 JDM Automatic GSR Transmission, or an OBD2 Automatic LS Transmission - which ever Tranny I decided to use I will get the appropriate ECU for it and will make sure to get the ECU in OBD2 and for it to be Automatic. No worries thus far.
Now, I had heard something about the need of a TCM (Transmission Control Module) or a TCU (Transmission Control Unit) in order for the Swap to work. According to the source that provided this information, if I do not get this TCM (or TCU) the Tranny will not shift as its not controlled by the ECU. Apparently, USDM Civics do not use this TCM (or TCU) for their Automatic Tranny's, but all USDM & JDM Automamic B-Series do. Can anyone please confirm these last two sentences?
If in the end I do need to use a TCM (or TCU) in order to perform this Swap, where would I be able to get one and how would I go about wiring it, so that it works correctly? Where can I get instructions as to which TCM (or TCU) wires go to which pins, etc. Does the TCM (or TCU) have to match the Tranny & ECU or will any OBD2 Auto B-Series TCM (or TCU) work? For example, if I use a OBD2 JDM Automatic B16 Transmission & ECU, will the TCM (or TCU) have to be from an OBD2 JDM Automatic B16 or can it be from a OBD2 Automatic LS?
This is really frustrating and I could use all the help I can get from you guys. I hope someone has the answers to my questions and is willing to help me out. Thanks in advance guys
Regards,
Danny

Alright, just got off the phone with Hmotors and they said that I do not need a TCU. They said all I would need would be the OBD2 JDM B16 Auto Tranny and ECU for the swap to work.
Steve explained that B-Series EKs do not use TCU's only B-Series Integras do. Can anyone confirm this for me? I dont want to end up buying the Tranny and ECU and then needing to buy a TCU by itself which will be a bitch to find.
