D2 Full Coilovers & Raceland Coilover (swapping Springs) Spring-rate help!!!!
So yeah I have D2 Coilover's for the last 3 years. One shock has been messed up the whole time. Sent it back to D2 they said it was fine. Shock was blown. Now it's leaking fluid etc. I have 2 brand new shocks but from rust and stuff not worth me swapping it out.
Racelands are my next option. I don't care if you don't like these but i'm on a budget since my car is super dangorgous and feels like my wheel is going to fall off from all the play in the piston.
Spring Rates of Raceland:
Spring Rate: Front 310 lbs/inch
Spring Rate: Rear 417 lbs/inch
Spring Rates of D2's:
Spring Rates: 7.2 kg/mm (front),
Spring Rates: 8.0 kg/mm (rear)
(Can anyone convert the D2 Spring rate into lbs/inch??
I was thinking of taking the highest spring rate and putting it on the FRONT and taking the second highest and putting it on the REAR.
IE. Take the springs from the D2's and use them if they are higher then the Racelands since I want a low drop.
What would you advise?

D2 sent them back to you, yet they were blown? That is ridiculous. Do you want to get the D2's actually rebuilt, or just get some racelands? The racelands will not last especially if your going to be rolling around slammed.

Re: D2 Full Coilovers & Raceland Coilover (swapping Springs) Spring-rate help!!!!
Yes sir. I called them may times about issue, they were blown since I bought them. So i bought a new shock for it. but since its rusted and seized up can't really swap it out
I have delt with them long enough, not that one bad shock is leaking fluid and is giving TONS of play in my wheel, (scary to drive and need to do something fast) I was going to swap out the new shock with the bad but due to rust and the adjusting peices you use the toools with keep cracking the aluminum. Soaked it and no luck.
but back to my question about the spring rates. IF i use the highest spring rate on front etc. will i be good?
I called D2 and they said if I send them back the NEW strut I have they would send me a complete Assembly for 180$ So it would cost me 300$ all and all for that ONE complete shock Assembly. Then again how Do I know the rest wont fail!?
For 380$ I can get the whole new Racelands even if they last a year, they are under warranty. Many VW guys love them. We shall see...

One more reason to NEVER buy d2 products.
The springs rates are roughly 400F-450R. This is just a rough estamint, so don't quote me on them.
I haven't heard good things about racelands, but, it's your money.

Anyways I deal with many many different brands and we have replaced many with our coilovers. I have kept most of these parts not only for my own research, but to also help guys like you out that blow these dampers which do happen. So if you have a complete damper already from D2, and just need some new collars I should have them in stock. I will have to check as they are most likely used. Please provide me of a list of parts you need to complete your damper. You should be able to salvage the top mounts, rubber boot, bumpstop, top mount hardware, and bushings. You probably can reuse your lower mount unless it is stuck for good. So if you just need some locking collars I probably have some that will work no problem. There may be hope to salvage what you already have as well as limit the amount of money out of your pocket. Hopefully I can help you out as that is what we are here for. We service not only our own dampers, but others as well.
I am curious? Did you try inquiring about the other parts you need from D2? Did they happen to say that they could only sell you a complete damper assembly, and not the individual parts you need to complete your damper? So you sent them your shock to inspect and they said it was fine? When did you get the new damper? Did you order one after you realized the one they sent back to you was still blown or what? I am not surprised, yet I am shocked that they could not tell that the damper was blown LOL. Your a shock absorber company, and you can't tell that your own product that you sell has failed? Really now LOL.

What is you intended use for this car? Purely street driven? AutoX/Track? Slammed to the ground?
Theoretically, those spring rates in those locations would work just fine and provide a pretty decent ride and handling characteristics for street use or entry level competition use. But it really also depends on the build quality and the limitations of those "Raceland" shocks.
Someone needs to compile all the failures/problems people have posted about companies like D2 and share them for others to read and learn... lol.

Re: D2 Full Coilovers & Raceland Coilover (swapping Springs) Spring-rate help!!!!
The lesson to be learned here is to start with higher quality products. Installing suspension components is generally very straightforward, but why do it two or three times when you could just do it once?

I wonder what the R&D was on d2 coilovers.. they installed them and said.. well this works.. then facerolled the adjustment settings(luls) and after a 12 minute hot lap then results were AMAZING....
