I don't know if it is the inner tie rod or outer tie rod. When you pull the outer tie end off of the rotor you can pull it back and forth(play). Which one would cause this problem the inner or outer tie rod end.


Also can this problem make your steering wheel be off center ( when I am going straight the steering wheel is more to the the left than center). And can it make your front end shake since it has play in the(inner/outer) tie rod.

Need help thanks in advance.

first off the inner tie rod should be able to go in and out because that is what is does to push and pull the wheel to turn, check for excessive play and as far as the steering wheel, tie rods are what directly affect the sterring wheel position. before correcting the toe make sure the wheel is centered

isolate the source of the play with your hands. shake things and put your hand over the balljoints to see if thats the cause.

the outer balljoint should be able to rock forward and back, its a balljoint. it should do that. but it shouldnt have a side to side play in any direction.

same with the inner tie rod. the balljoint is covered by the accordian boot. you should be able to feel through the boot without taking it apart or destroying it. if the boot is already toast, well good chance the balljoint is too. as well as the steering rack...

I don't know if i'm explaining this right or not. Okay when i take the wheel off I can put both of my hands on the rotor and shake it back and forth, were as on the other side of the car it doesn't move at all. It doesn't have alot of play but it has some. I'm more than willing to replace the part I just need to know what part it is.

So the toe could be the reason that the steering wheel is not centered. Sorry I really don't know alot about suspesion.

if your grabbing the wheel and the ENTIRE wheel can rock back and forth meaning the top and bottom together then that sounds like a bad wheel bearing which sucks cuz their spendy at least 80-160 bucks but if it rocks back and forth top to bottom that a ball joint problem, also check what TYSON was saying, if the boot is gone its likely your in for a night

The thing is when I take the ball joint off the wheel assembly and try to move the rotor then it doesn't move only the tie rod bar moves.

bump cuz im havin the same problem... if i grab driver wheel at 12 an 6 oclock no movement, if i grab it at 9 and 3 it moves about a half inch left an right... passenger side doesnt move at all.. im just gonna buy a new suspension kit, UCA's, LCA's, inner/outer tie-rods, an maybe new steering rack... My car has been through hell for past 3 years working in construction field cuz i drive through madddddd rugged areas, with huge potholes, ect.... So yeah now that i dont work there anymore i wanna make everything brand new... My toe is off on the front very bad too "alignment job i had done was the shittiest ever" my tires are brand new on the outside, but have treads showing on the inside... "not literally brand new but u get idea"..... So yeah if anyone knows how to tell between inner or outer tie rod, how can u tell what one is bad, id like to know...

if the rotor is moving a half inch, dont you think you can figure out what else is moving or causing that to move??

dont just sit there and look at it. feel it! if you cant find it, take it to a shop.

i cant diagnose your suspension over the internet. and neither can anyone else except you or someone else qualified that actually works on your car and knows what theyre doing.

ok well minus the smart ***' ness thanks for ur input, even though you could have simply not said anything and I probably would have learned more...

I wasn't asking anyone to come fix my car, I can take care of that myself I was simply asking how to u determine wether its inner or outer tie-rods...

now if anyone who actually KNOWS how to TELL THE DIFFERENCE, would be able to throw some input on this one it'd be greatly appreciated...

please don't write an say "I'm not gonna fix it over the Internet" or anything elementary like that, because you're simply wasting keystrokes...

i think my tie rod boot ( if thats what its called ) is busted on both sides because of the amount of greast and other stuff thats around, do i need to replace just the boot or the entire tie rod ends? thanks
