The answer completely depends on where you live and what the inspection laws are there.

Well it depends on your inspection laws, because here in California we cannot legally check for emissions AKA smog a car if it has a motor that is unoriginal (in example if I put a GSR motor into my Hatch, the smog person AKA emissions mechanic will not smog my car because the motor is technically "illegal" to have because it is not original therefore will not have the same emissions and specs as the stock one). BAR means Bureau of Automotive Repair which stands here in California where you can have a swap. You take it to the refree and depending if you pass the inspection you can legally have that motor in your car with an authentic sticker in your engine bay with a VIN number that tells the emissions mechanic, or in a worst case scenario, cops, that you have the legal rights to have the swapped motor in your car. Not too sure with NC laws.

Nowhere in the states is more strict than California, so I think it should be easier on you. We are the import bay, any car that is imported must pass our emissions before they can be shipped out into the states. All the R32, R33, and R34 Skylines are legalized here in California.

There are road legal Skylines, recently 2 for sale in Los Angeles & San Diego area asking $40k for a blue one and $50k for a 900HP Single Turbo silver one, both R32 with LEGAL CALIFORNIA TITLES and paperwork proven. So you are false, if a Skyline is for show, it needs not be legal, the only time it's illegal to have one is when you drive it on public roads.

Op u should find out if u have to blow clean or if they just inspect it. Most the techs could care less. Out here in strict cali i just take it in like its a normal car. Stock intake, stock header, stock exhaust with cat. They blow clean and its good to go, just make sure the timing is good no check engine lights and its odb2. Worse thing the guy can say is it fails visual if he knows what hes looking at then ask him what it takes. If it was out here i dont know if lsv would work cuz its a nonv block with a vtec ecu. If for example u had a 97 ek out here u would need a motor from a 97 or newer. If u use a 98 gsr u would need a 98 p72, stock gsr intake and ex mani with all the sensors, charcoal canister and cat obviously. Then like previously stated u would get it barred by a state specialist then u wouldnt have to worry again

those are gray market cars that are titled as kit cars. i have researched all that before bro. some are also grandfathered in but the ones that are really good to be brought in but need to be turned dot are the r33s. there was a company that was researching how to dot approve them but they are long gone. so no my info is not wrong. do research bro

as u can see it was legalized in 2000 so if u no shortly after they stopped allowing them in and the ones already in were left to stay as gray market cars
