Default My grandma broke arm - carbon fiber cast??

My grandmother broke her arm
she can't barely hold up her body with the cast because she is soo frail

Would it even be possible to make a carbon fiber cast (something light and strong) ???

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to make a cast from carbon fiber. It would be expensive though and fairly difficult to make though, mostly because carbon fiber is layed and then baked, so I don't know how you would get it on your grandma's arm. Click the image to open in full size.

I don't see how the carbon fiber is gonna work.
I think you are better off making a wheel holster thing so she can rest her arm on it and walk along with it as well sit.

dont worry, they make casts that are light enough.

the cast I had for my thumb was solid as a rock, light, and removable

dude that sucks that you grandma got jacked up. i have to admit that the idea of a CARBON FIBER CAST cracks me up though man... definetely stay away from poly urethane, it's too heavy. ask a doctor if there is a lighter alternative than what she has.

casts are VERY lightweight already....i've had about 7-10 put on at different times. including one that went down both legs....and all the way up to my chest....even that one's just a few lbs.

i dont know that you've ever picked up a used one...but try. they weight maybe 20oz...if not 10.

the thing that weighs them down is the clothe that they wrap inside the bandages.

using a carbon fiber really isn't gonna help.

grandma shouldn't be using the arm while it's hurt anyways....she should have it in a sling in a relatively stationary position.

Look up Dr. Terry Trammel and/or Dr. Steve Olvey. Both are orthopedic surgeons based in Indianapolis. They can probably help with finding someone to make a carbon fiber cast.

Carbon fiber casts are made up all the time. But only for those who can afford it.

Fiberglass doesn't weigh much mroe than CF, really, an extra couple ounces shouldn't make the difference between her being able the move around.

Simple, make a casting of her arm, apply mold release, pour plaster, voila! Now you don't have to bake grandma's arm!

How are you going to get it on after you're done. Dislocate her thumb?
