How to: Clutch replacement
#51
By looking at the clearance I cannot see how you guys are able to move the tranny out without it hitting the chassis considering they didn't **** the motor at an angle. When I looked under there I saw only like 3-4 inches of clearance.
Oh well I'm going to save this thread so when I do my clutch change it wont be so hard.

Did you even need a engine hoist or anything to support the motor while the other mounts were off? I swore i seen someone use a engine hoist one time when they were taking out a 5th gen tranny or is that not nessecary?

Thread back from the dead, just thought to bump it since it's a life saver.
Dam I just got my done and used the awsome write up. It also took me 2.5 days and my dad helped me out taking the tranny out and putting it back in but the rest I did it by myself. I swear there's no F#$kin room to talke out the tranny. My dad had to wack the front cross member to get a groove just so we could get 2 more inches of room to take out the tranny.
For those who dare try this, here's an advise. Take out the studs for the tranny mount, this will give you more clearance and save some F#$kin time. Plus it was a lot easier to put back in without the studs there.

lol haha I knew u would like that....
Honestly I tried to use a jack the first time and wasn't able to find a good spot....but you have the right idea....an engine hoist is a great tool for the job....

Mine is about dead, stock clutch with 168,000 on it. Absolutely cannot afford $390 to have it put in, looks like I'm in for a doozie.

Re: How to: Clutch replacement (ECX)
I realize that this thread is ancient but I have a quick question. Does anyone have any idea how to contact Steve because I first got this car when I was 15 and since then I have done a lot to it, and I would just like to speak to him about some things and let him see it. Here are some pics from a few months ago

when i did my auto to manual, what i did was buy some zip lock bags and a sharpie. every bolt you take out from a particular object, put in the bag and label it it. best way bar none.

Re: How to: Clutch replacement
Here is the word document download. Let me know if there are any problems and I can just email it.

Notes: I didn't have to remove the exhaust on my 4th gen, I think the 5th is the same way.. not sure why it's in this write-up. It's a lot of common sense as far as what you have to remove when you're actually down there working on it. The job as a whole is easier than people say, imo.
