Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
With it being a few years after this thread was originally created, I was wondering if the helpful info contained in this thread (steps to legalize jdm itr for ca ref) still stands. Has anything changed in the ref system/CA regs? I need to do this to mine.

Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
go with a USDM ITR swap. no noticable power difference and easier to get passing.
if you already have the JDM ITR motor, yes, this info still applies as far as I know. you need emissions and sensors changed so a USDM ECU will run the car properly without CEL's
this guide covers that very well

No this info doesn't really apply anymore as you can't do jdm swaps. its good info if and only if the car the motor is going into is a usdm itr because its a direct replacement. california is ****in lame

Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
so touch base, its been so long that i forgot my pw and my pw goes to an old email i don't have...bummer...
so to respect to forums, im gunna say i did my research and couldnt find much more then this close to my situation.
Im working on getting a h22a1 motor out of a 93 prelude to pass emissions in a 2000 civic si. So far i got that i needs an obd2 intakemanifold, obd2 distributor. Also something with the crank positioning sensor but if im correct cant you cheat some of the sensors to read ok. I live in NC so when I hear all the CA talk it throws me off lol.
Oh and yes i know this forum is talking about jdm to usdm obd2, so don't rant on me, this isnt my first rodeo. :D

Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
Great write up! I cant believe that i didnt see this post sooner.
I have a 99 EM1, with the JDM b18c. Im getting the code 45 that you mentioned after the write up, and im curious to know why the intake manifold would make such a drastic difference in fuel metering, and if going with the USDM manifold would fix my code.
Also, what does that nipple on the throttle body go to in an OEM installation? mine is currently hooked up to a vacuum line i believe... cant remember exactly at this moment. thanks for any info you have!

Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
Here in Nevada, my buddy just went to the DMV to get his 92 Civic w/ JDM B16A swap inspected. They took one look at it and told him "NO CHANCE!!!" Apparently they will not even give a JDM swap a look. They are saying it's federal law that you cannot put a JDM motor into a USDM car unless it's been specifically imported as US market spec. I asked to see some info regarding this law and they produced nothing...
I was pretty much told to go F myself...
Now my friend has to find himself a USDM engine to get the car registered again...

then bolt on usdm intake and exhaust manifolds and electronics
They cant turn you away jsut for a JDM motor. They need to prove it is JDM spec
sounds like a lazy person there if they couldnt even get info for making it legal

Tell him to get a mechanic to right him up paperwork saying the engine has been rebuilt with USDM spec pistons and head

Well a ballhone tool is cheap, you jsut need to find out if the USDM block has the same bore (oe 75mm, 75.25mm OB, 75.5mm OB, etc..)
ebay has good deals on just piston rings. 99% of the ring brands on ebay make them for OEM cars, so no worries on quality

Re: legalizing your jdm itr motor!
This is a very good thread with lots of helpful information. I do have a few questions though.
People are still spreading different rumors about BAR passing JDM motors. What I've heard recently is that they're able to now pass JDM motors. So is the information in this thread still apply in 2015?
I have a 1996 civic cx, with a 98 spec b18c Type R engine. I've read somewhere on H-T that the 98 spec comes some of the sensors that are need to pass the motor. So will all I need is the intake manifold from a b18c5 and ecu? Will appreciate the help very much. Thanks
